Heraklion and Knossos: The island's capital puts the Minoan palace about 5km from the centre and backs it with the Archaeological Museum's original frescoes, while the Venetian Koules fortress still guards the old harbour. Ferries leave the port for Santorini and Piraeus, which makes the capital the natural base for island-hopping add-ons.
Historic Rethymno: Beneath the vast Venetian Fortezza of the 1570s, minarets and Venetian doorways share the old-town lanes, and a sandy town beach runs for several kilometres east toward Platanes. Sitting roughly midway between Chania and Heraklion, it also works as a touring base for both halves.
Lakeside Agios Nikolaos: Cafes ring the 64m-deep Lake Voulismeni, joined to the sea by a channel dug in the 19th century, in a working town that keeps its Greek rhythm alongside proper beaches. Evenings revolve around the waterfront volta, coffee first and dinner later.
Luxury Elounda: Mirabello Bay's calm, sheltered water fronts the island's biggest cluster of five-star spa resorts, with boats crossing to Spinalonga's 1579 Venetian fortress from the village and neighbouring Plaka. It sits about 11km north of Agios Nikolaos, close enough to borrow its restaurants and boat trips.
Pink-sand Elafonissi: The protected Natura 2000 lagoon shelves ankle-deep over white and pink-tinged sand about 75km southwest of Chania, and an early start comfortably beats the coaches to it. The water is shallow enough that small children can paddle across to the islet.
The famous sights book out fast in peak season, so plan summer holidays to Crete around early starts and leave slower days in between.
Palace of Knossos: Europe's oldest city site sits about 5km south of Heraklion, excavated and controversially restored by Arthur Evans from 1900, and the labyrinth myth makes far more sense once you have walked its corridors. Go early or late in the day in summer and pair it with the museum in town.
Samaria descent: The 16km walk drops from the Omalos plateau through the Iron Gates, about 3m wide at the narrowest point, to Agia Roumeli, a finish village with no road access; it usually opens May to October. Boats from Agia Roumeli connect onward to the south-coast villages.
Balos by boat: Day boats from Kissamos call first at Gramvousa's 16th-century pirate fortress, then anchor where a white sandbar splits the shallow, warm lagoon from the open sea; the drive-and-walk alternative is rough going. On the sandbar side the water stays warm and shallow for most of the season.
Minoan masterpieces: Heraklion's Archaeological Museum gathers the Phaistos Disc, the snake goddess figurines and the original Knossos frescoes, covering 5,500 years of island history in one essential, air-conditioned building. It makes the palace itself far easier to read afterwards.
Spinalonga crossing: Boats from Elounda, Plaka and Agios Nikolaos reach the fortress islet in minutes; it held Greece's last leper colony from 1903 to 1957, and Victoria Hislop's novel The Island tells its story. The visit lands harder if someone reads the novel on the sunbeds first.
Vai beach day: Europe's largest natural palm grove, roughly 5,000 endemic Cretan date palms, stands behind a golden crescent of sand in the far east, pairing neatly with Toplou Monastery and the Itanos ruins nearby. Arrive before the day trips and the crescent is yours for an hour.
Arkadi Monastery: A national symbol since 1866, when besieged Cretans blew up its gunpowder store rather than surrender, the fortified monastery about 23km from Rethymno keeps one of the island's finest Venetian baroque facades. The site featured on the old Greek 100-drachma note, a measure of what it means here.
As standard: breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, snacks between meals, and locally produced drinks such as house wine, beer and soft drinks.
