Monastiraki & Psyrri: This is the market-and-nightlife hub — the Sunday flea market, rooftop bars staring straight at the Acropolis, and mezedopoleia that stay open late. Central and lively, it's often where the best value among cheap holidays to Athens turns up for a short stay. 

The Athenian Riviera (Glyfada to Vouliagmeni): The coastal strip running south of town offers organised beaches, marinas, and seafood tavernas, all linked to the centre by tram. It's the pick if you want sand and sea sitting alongside your sightseeing rather than an hour away.
