Romantic Escapes in Greece and Italy
Views, food and atmosphere matter most for two, and these four places deliver all three.
- Santorini: Santorini is famous for sunsets over the caldera, whitewashed villages and cliff-edge hotels with private terraces. Oia is the most photographed village, while Fira has more restaurants, and a hotel with a view is worth the premium.
- Lake Como: Villas, gardens and ferry rides define Lake Como. Stay in or near Bellagio for walks, lakeside dinners and quiet evenings, and take the ferry to explore other villages. Book a room with a lake view if the budget allows.
- Sorrento: Lemon groves, sea views and easy day trips to Capri and the Amalfi coast make Sorrento a romantic base. Hotels with terraces over the bay are the highlight. Ferries and trains make day trips easy.
- Venice: Canals, small bridges and quiet backstreets suit a couple's weekend in Venice. Stay away from the busiest streets after dark, and book a hotel near the water for the best atmosphere. A canal-side room is worth the extra cost.
Beach Escapes for Two
A quiet beach, a good restaurant and a hotel with a calm pool make for a restful week.
- Algarve: Golden cliffs, secluded coves and clifftop paths define the Algarve. Choose a small hotel near Carvoeiro or Lagos for quiet evenings and a short walk to the sand. The area is also good for gentle clifftop walks.
- Paphos: Harbour restaurants, mosaics and sea-view hotels give Paphos a relaxed, romantic feel. It is warm from spring to late autumn, and flights take under five hours. A hotel near the harbour keeps restaurants close.
- Ibiza: Beyond the clubs, Ibiza has quiet coves, hillside villages and boutique hotels. Choose the north or west of the island for calm and sunset views. Hire a car to find the quieter coves.
- Malta: Honey-coloured streets, harbours and sea swimming spots make Malta an easy pick for a short break. Valletta and Mdina are excellent for evening walks. Short bus rides link the main towns.
