Palma (Bay of Palma): The capital is a working city with a gothic cathedral, a Moorish-era old town, and one of Spain's largest marinas. Around 8 km from the airport, it suits anyone wanting culture, restaurants, and shopping over a beach-first week.

Port de Sóller & the northwest: Reached from Palma by a 1912 wooden railway through the orange groves, this horseshoe bay sits beneath the Tramuntana peaks. It draws couples and walkers who want scenery and a working harbour rather than high-rise resorts.

Alcúdia & the north coast: Around 55 km from the airport, Alcúdia pairs a walled medieval old town with the long, shallow sands of Playa de Muro. It is consistently one of the better-value bases for cheap holidays to Majorca without thinning out on beach quality.

Cala d'Or & the east coast: A cluster of low-rise white villas threaded around a series of sheltered sandy coves, roughly 65 km from the airport. Calmer than the southwest and popular with families who want a quieter rhythm.

Magaluf & the southwest: The island's liveliest strip, with waterparks, a long beach, and a young nightlife crowd. Palmanova and Santa Ponsa next door offer the same access at a calmer pitch.

Palma old town: La Seu cathedral, the circular Bellver Castle on its wooded hill, and the Passeig des Born sit within easy walking distance, which is why Palma features on so many Mediterranean city breaks as well as beach weeks.

The Sóller train and tram: A vintage wooden train climbs from Palma through tunnels and orange groves to Sóller, where an open-sided tram carries you down to the port. Running since 1912, the carriages still have their original polished-wood interiors and brass fittings, and it is a half-day out in itself.

Cuevas del Drach: At Porto Cristo on the east coast, these caves hold Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes in the world, where a short classical concert is performed from boats out on the water. The visit runs about an hour along lit walkways before the music, and pairs well with a swim at one of the nearby east-coast coves.

Cap de Formentor: The island's northern tip is a dramatic drive to a lighthouse, with the Mirador des Colomer viewpoint over sheer cliffs on the way. Best tackled early, before the coach parties arrive — and in peak summer the road is restricted to buses and taxis during the day, so an early start earns you the views with the car park almost empty.

Waterparks: Aqualand El Arenal near Palma is among the largest in Europe, while Western Water Park at Magaluf and Hidropark at Alcúdia cover the southwest and north. Most north-coast and Bay of Palma hotels can arrange transfers, which makes a waterpark day easy to slot in without a hire car.
