Best Places to Visit in Nicaragua
The country splits into a few distinct regions, and weighing up the main places to visit in Nicaragua usually comes down to how much time goes on cities, volcanoes, lakes or beaches. Each of the six below deserves far more than a rushed half-day, and pairing two or three of them makes for a well-balanced week.
-
Granada: Founded in 1524 on the shore of Lake Nicaragua, this is the country's postcard city of Andalusian-style houses, horse carriages and easy boat trips out to the islets of Las Isletas.
-
León: The old colonial capital and university city keeps a livelier, more studenty feel, crowned by the largest cathedral in Central America and its famous bright white rooftop you can walk across.
-
Ometepe Island: Two volcanoes rise straight from the lake here, Concepción still active at over 1,600 metres and Maderas cloaked in forest around a crater lagoon, reached by ferry from San Jorge.
-
Masaya Volcano: A short drive from Granada, this is one of the very few places anywhere you can look down into a glowing lava lake, best seen on an early-evening visit.
-
San Juan del Sur: The Pacific's best-known beach town wraps around a horseshoe bay, with easygoing surf breaks like Playa Maderas and Playa Hermosa only a short hop away.
-
Corn Islands: Two small Caribbean specks off the east coast, Creole in culture and ringed by reef, offering the slow-island counterpoint to the mainland volcanoes and colonial streets.
