Cairo and the City Half of a Cruise and Stay
Two or three nights in the capital before or after the sailing is the structure we book most often, and it is what turns a river trip into the fullest version of Egypt holidays: pyramids, museums and the river in one fortnight.
- Cairo: The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square still holds tens of thousands of objects across two crowded floors, and Khan el-Khalili has traded on the same lanes since the fourteenth century. Allow 45 to 60 minutes to cross town at almost any hour, because the traffic does not really ease. The stay works much like our city breaks do, with a central hotel and short hops, and our Cairo holidays pages list both the downtown and pyramid-side options.
- Giza: The Grand Egyptian Museum opened in full in November 2025 and shows the complete Tutankhamun collection together for the first time, roughly 5,000 objects, about two kilometres from the plateau itself. The Great Pyramid and the Sphinx reward an early start: gates open at seven and the coach parties build from nine. Budget a full day for the pair rather than trying to bolt them onto an arrival afternoon.
- Saqqara: Thirty kilometres south, the Step Pyramid of Djoser is the oldest large stone building anywhere, finished around 2650 BC and reopened after a fourteen-year restoration. The site is markedly quieter than the main plateau and you can walk into the burial chamber. Memphis, the first capital of a unified Egypt, sits twenty minutes further on and adds an hour to the same drive.
- Dahshur: Sneferu built two pyramids here inside a single reign: the Bent Pyramid, where the angle changes partway up because the original slope proved unstable, and the Red Pyramid, the first true pyramid to hold its shape. Both are open to climb into, with a fraction of the visitors of the famous sites. Half a day covers them comfortably and it is the stop repeat visitors ask us for by name.
- Alexandria: Three hours north by road or two by fast train, on a Mediterranean coastline that behaves nothing like the rest of the country: wider beaches, cooler water and Hellenistic foundations under the modern city. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Roman amphitheatre and the catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa make a full day. The seafood along the corniche is the best argument for staying the night rather than day-tripping it.
