Los Cristianos: Once a small fishing harbour, this working town still runs daily ferries to La Gomera and keeps its prices gentler than its glossier neighbours, which makes it a natural base for cheap holidays to Tenerife that never feel cut off from the beaches, bars and boat trips next door.

Teide National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007, the park surrounds Spain's highest volcano with ochre lava fields, twisted rock formations and crater-rim trails that feel closer to another planet than to a beach island, despite sitting barely an hour above the southern resorts by road.

La Orotava: Ten minutes uphill from Puerto de la Cruz, this historic town keeps some of the best-preserved seventeenth-century mansions in the Canaries along its steep cobbled streets, including the carved wooden balconies of the Casa de los Balcones and gardens laid out in terraces down the hillside.

Teide cable car: Ride up to 3,555 metres for views across the whole archipelago, then walk the final stretch to the summit crater with a free permit that needs booking weeks or even months in advance.

Whale watching: Join a catamaran from Los Gigantes or Puerto Colón, because the deep channel between Tenerife and La Gomera is one of the most reliable cetacean-spotting stretches of water anywhere in Europe, with sightings on the clear majority of sailings, and most skippers refund or rebook on the rare blank day.

Masca gorge: Hike down from the improbably perched village down to the sea, a demanding descent of around three hours through towering rock walls that finishes with a boat transfer along the coast back to Los Gigantes; places are limited and pre-booking is essential.

Siam Park: Spend a full day at the park regularly rated among the best in the world, where the Tower of Power slide drops 28 metres before shooting riders through a shark-filled aquarium tunnel.

Stargazing: Book an evening tour in Teide National Park, one of the finest dark-sky locations on the planet, home to a working international observatory and skies so clear that professional astronomers chose this mountain decades ago and have never left.

Anaga Rural Park: Walk the ancient laurel forests of this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve where mist-fed trails thread between knife-edge ridges, hidden beaches and hamlets that still feel a century away from the resorts.

Loro Parque: Visit the Puerto de la Cruz institution founded in 1972 and now as well known for its conservation foundation's global work as for its parrot collection, orca displays and walk-through penguin house.
