  So so hotel

  La Cantera is not really a boutique hotel or a 4 * hotel. A better description would be a rustic hotel in need of some sort of renovation. The furniture show scratches that shouldn’t have been there if you considered the price for the rooms. The breakfast is ok. Enough for the morning, but still not impressive like other 4 starts places. The hotel looks clean. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Probably the best part of this hotel.

  Don't upgrade to the lake view

  Easily the most disappointing of our many hotels in Argentina. OK, I know El Calafate isn't Buenos Aires but even so the hotel wasn't up to scratch. The rooms was big and the shower magnificent, but the whole place is dated and needs a bit of TLC. We paid extra (£49 per night) for a lake view but the hotel is miles from the lake and it just isn't worth it. In addition, I believe the non lake views had a half decent view. The hotel is also a decent walk up a very steep hill from the centre and although the hotel mentioned a shuttle we never got to grips with it. Many have mentioned the cheerful staff but apart from the lovely lady at breakfast I can't say that we found anyone to be particularly jolly. We also were charged for water from the minbar which we didn't have and if you wanted a coffee then you could order it but it was charged to your room. When we did order one we were charged for a cappuchino which we didn't have.The breakfast did include different types of egg which was good, but again, compared to our other hotels was very average. While the hotel is not located directly on the shoreline, many guests value these views, though we understand this did not feel worthwhile in your case.Our location on a hill is clearly stated prior to booking, as it offers tranquility and scenery, but we recognize it may not suit every traveler. The shuttle service operates at scheduled times, and we regret if this was not clearly explained during your stay.Concerning the minibar water and coffee charges, we apologize for any confusion or billing errors.   Outdated and no atmosphere at all

  It's a little way from the main street. There's not much atmosphere or conviviality. The staff are friendly, but the rooms, lobby and bar could do with an update. Our room was big but old, with new carpet laid over the old. The toilet seat was broken, for example, but was not repaired. We didn't eat in the restaurant because there was nobody there, and it also felt old and uninviting. Take 'boutique' out of the name. I wouldn't recommend it; there are plenty of more atmospheric hotels closer to the main street. The view was great though, because it's located on a hill.   Overdue for an Update

  Rooms are way overdue for a refresh. Carpet was stained, furniture old and scarred. Bathroom was clean but dated. Room had an okay view, but obstructed by the buildings and overhead wires. Bed was reasonably comfortable and linens were decent. The property is located up a hill from the main street in town. About a 10 minute, unpleasant walk with no sidewalks and heavy traffic. Overall, the place is tired and dated.   Very good base in El Calafate

  The hotel is a bit up hill, but nothing you cannot do walking as the area is very quiet and safe.The service was very good with all personnel willing to engage and help. Breakfast was very good with many options to choose from. We also ordered a vianda and it was large and with all the food you might need for a trekking.Our room was in the lower level, fairly big and comfortable. Bathroom was clean and water pressure very good.Overall, a very pleasant stay!
