    A Nice Stay with Friendly Staff

    We had a nice overnight at this boutique hotel, and the hotel was close to full. We selected it based on TA reviews and cost. We’d call it about 3.5 stars, yet round up based upon the friendliness of the staff.Things we liked:- Great location. ½ block from the beach. On the edge of “downtown” Byron Bay; everything is in walking distance.- Friendly staff.- The rooms are very large and well appointed. Very clean, and generally in good condition. Bathroom counter space is lean, however, one wall of the room is all desk level, so you can compensate.- The light breakfast of fruit juice, a banana, and a muffin was a nice start to the day.- Free parking is available under the building, which is a pretty key perk in Byron Bay. The property generously allowed us to park beyond checkout time, so we could spend more time in town. The spots are a bit cozy, particularly if you have a larger car. Other notes:- As a 20 room, small motel they operate with the business model of reception being manned about 0700-1900. - The rooms use traditional keys vice key cards. There is not a chain or deadbolt to secure the room from the inside. The room keys have a second key for the front door for returning after 1900. Rooms are all interior corridor entry.- There is a small in-room safe. It will hold the family jewels, but not a laptop.- There is not an ice machine. - When we booked the room, it was among the more affordable in the central area of Byron Bay. That said, it cost essentially the same as 5-star properties in Brisbane, Cairns and Gold Coast that offered more generous amenities. Perhaps nothing more than a reflection of the Byron Bay economy. All told, it is solid choice in a high demand resort area. It is more custom than say a HP/HH, FI, or HI, yet roughly the same room quality.

    We stayed here for three nights and it was all good. Close to the beach and on the way to the Lighthouse and the sunset.     CAUTION! Takes your money when it suits them. Poor processes, worse customer service.

    Want drama? This is the place. I stayed at Hibiscus but checked out at Waves.I attempted to hand my keys directly to reception but instead was told to put it in a bowl overflowing with dozens of other keys. She refused to touch them or to find out which room was checking out, just told to drop keys in the bowl. I did as instructed and left for the airport.Later that evening, after my flight had landed, I received a notification that the hotel had taken a sum of money from my credit card. I called immediately and was met with rudeness as a girl bluntly stated: “You didn’t return your keys.” I explained that I had, and that the staff member had offered no procedure beyond the bowl. Still, I was repeatedly told they couldn’t find them, as if that were somehow my fault?!I emailed management and insisted they review their security footage, warning that I would dispute the charge as fraudulent. The next day, the transaction disappeared.I've travelled for 15+ years, and this takes top spot for worst checkout experience. This hotel needs to fix their basic checkout protocols and find employees with better customer service!     Great location, walk to restaurants, bars, beach etc. The hotel was clean and comfortable and the muffins, coffee and fruit in the foyer in the morning was a nice surprise.     Ok but smell of curry

    Generally OK but disappointed that a curry smell obviously left by other guests was allowed to linger in the cupboards and the room was provided in that state I still have a curry smell in my bag that was in the room 2 months on. Otherwise amenities are fine
