    Expected a little more...

    rating16 Apr 2026

Rydges was a bit of a mixed bag. The beds were comfortable, staff were pleasant, and we appreciated the later checkout. Housekeeping also did a great job servicing the room while we were out. That said, the decor felt quite tired and there were a few maintenance issues. One of the beds was missing a bedside table and didn’t have a bedhead, which made it feel like an afterthought — I ended up dragging a chair in from the balcony just to have somewhere to put things. The shower door didn’t close properly, and the bathroom ceiling looked like it was mid-repair (it had been replaced but not painted after lighting work), giving it an unfinished feel.Street noise was quite loud at night, so we ended up using white noise to sleep. On the plus side, the blackout curtains were excellent. The shower temperature was also oddly difficult to get right — something that shouldn’t be an issue with a standard mixer. The biggest downside for us was the carpet. It felt old, sticky and worn to the point where you didn’t really want to walk on it barefoot — it honestly gave off “old nightclub” vibes and made me wish I had slippers just to get from the bathroom to the bed. While the rest of the room appeared clean, the carpet let it down significantly.Location-wise, it’s great — plenty of food options nearby and an easy, pleasant 45ish minute walk to Circular Quay.Overall, it was a bit of a rollercoaster. There are definitely positives, but the condition of the room (particularly the carpet) would likely stop us from returning.

    A good city centre hotel

    rating27 Nov 2025

My family of three adults had a 5 night stay in the Rydges Apartment Hotel in November 2025. The hotel is located in CBD on the edge of China Town, so is surrounded by Asian food outlets and restaurants (see later comment). We had a family room with two queen beds. It was spacious, clean and well equipped with a fridge, small kitchenette and usual TV and tea/ coffee making facilities and room safe. For some reason our room didn’t have a chest of drawers or storage other than a shelf in the wardrobes which meant that we couldn’t completely unpack. We paid in advance for breakfast which was fine with a good hot and cold selection. The same food items were served each morning, so some variety would have been nice, e.g. pancakes instead of waffles. We were notified in advance that the hotel pool wouldn’t be open during our stay, which was disappointing as it was one of the factors that led us to choose the hotel. The hotel is well placed. Almost all of our days out were via Town Hall Station, which is a 10 minute walk with underground, bus and tram links, while Central Station (the main rail station with links to the airport is 15-18 minutes away). There is a large Coles Supermarket (similar to a UK Tesco/ Asda in a shopping centre, 1 minute away).Overall, the hotel is a good solid choice. Staff are friendly and helpful. We would certainly stay there again. Some TipsThere are a large number of Asian (Japanese, Korian, Chinese restaurants and a small number of Indian) in the area. This was great, but it was hard to find anything else. A shout out for the Martindo 1 (or similar name) on the opposite corner from the hotel. Here you can choose from noodles, veg, meats, fish and choose your stock to make fresh Ramen. Really tasty and excellent value. We used Opal travel cards to get around (available at stations and shops). The cost of travel is very low compared to the UK. We didn’t realise that the maximum spend on the card is capped at $50 (Aus) a week. To be clear, the cost of travel can exceed $50 in a week, but you are not charged the amounts which exceed $50. We used the cards on trams, underground, ferries to Manley, bus to Bondi, and train/ bus to the Blue Mountains). Great value.

Good central location, Darling Square at a stretch, more central

    rating24 Nov 2025

I had thought this was more in the area Darling Square itself, but like most places locations 'expand'. Having said that the location was very central and walking distance to the light rail, trains, Queen Victoria Building, David Jones etc. We booked a 1 bedroomed apartment and it was much smaller than the photo indicated. Comfortable, but cramped. Large bathroom, old fashioned individual shower taps, not mixers. We saw in another room a friend was in, a studio - it was large, had a reburbished kitchen, horrible carpet (who choose that?!), lovely tiled bathroom. I would suggest the sqm was the same at the 1 bedroomed. No noise from the street, a 'green hotel' and they give you a $10 per day credit which is a great idea. We are returning next year, but to a studio. Staff friendly and most helpful. Well stocked mini bar if that's your thing. Good eateries very near by.

Book early for discounted breakfast - worth it.

    rating23 Nov 2025

A good welcome and friendly staff, an excellent breakfast buffet, comfy beds and a reliable daily service of the room. We had a two bedroom/ two bathroom suite which was well laid out and the location was just fine. A short walking distance to many attractions and light rail stops. Ok, so the carpet was a bit tired and room a little dated but we actually loved the old style taps in the bathroom. It was helpful to have seen the review warning about making sure you are being dropped off at the correct Rydges - there are two in this area. And you do need to be aware that there is no parking or drop off immediately outside the entrance. Nonetheless we would happily return.
