Awesome place to stay with kids

    rating26 Apr 2026

Awesome location for a two night stay with our kids (2 & 5). We loved the price and the location. Took the T8 train to/from the airport. Easy walking access to the Sydney Harbor ferries and views of the opera house. The breakfast buffet was delicious and low cost. We got the king + bunkbed room and my kids were thrilled. The entire site is over an archeological dig which is super cool and unique.

Excellently located with views of the Sydney Opera House, the dorms are a good size with a good sized locker, great a/c. The roof terrace is amazing. You can borrow a hair dryer from reception. Would come back!

    Pathetic and incompetent workers

Unreal I messaged the hotel advising if we could pay on arrival as we had 2 separate cards. They messaged back saying we could and look forward to seeing me. We came off a cruise from the harbour early morning to leave our bags until checkin so they gave me a key to leave my bags in a room that is not secure so anyone can steal from the bags and told me to have a seat so they can look into my booking. We waited forever with kids in tow so i brought a coffee super weak and not what i ordered. I went to the counter and asked about my room but they said they never had my booking. I booked on BDC and showed them they were so rude and said BDC cancelled it cause i had to pay online. They didn't want to admit there fault after showing them the message they sent that i could pay on arrival. So all that time I was sitting there for nothing when I could have been checked into another hotel. They had no rooms available lies, so i had to book elsewhere costing me $600 extra for 1 night first time in sydney. The manager was very discriminative and looks down on brown skin people. They couldn't care less if you slept on the street. James H, at YHA Sydney Harbour, responded to this review Hi Mya,Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m sorry to hear about the experience you had on the morning of your arrival, especially travelling with children. I understand how frustrating that situation must have felt. After reviewing the booking, it appears the reservation had already been cancelled through Booking.com before your arrival due to a payment request that was sent through their system. As the booking had been cancelled on their side, the reservation was no longer active in our system by the time you arrived, which unfortunately meant we no longer had a room allocated. The message you received from our team regarding payment on arrival related to the booking while it was still active, however the later cancellation was generated by Booking.com when the payment was not completed through their platform. Because of this, the cancellation was unfortunately outside of our control. We are sorry that this was not clearer at the time and that the situation caused such a difficult start to your visit to Sydney. We will also review how we communicate these situations at the desk to ensure guests have clearer information when third party bookings are affected. We also take any feedback regarding how guests feel they were treated very seriously. Our team aims to treat every guest with respect and fairness, and we are sorry if your experience did not feel that way. Thank you again for your feedback.James Heggie - General Manager YHA Sydney Harbour

    Lovely place

    rating20 Jan 2026

I travelled and stayed alone to meet up with family near- by. As a 41 year old and first experience of staying in a shared room (4 female room) I could not fault the place. My room was quiet and safe. The other girls were friendly and considerate with one another. I saved a considerable amount of money by sharing rather than my own room so I would highly recommend this if in doubt. The hostel is literally a five minute walk Sydney harbour bridge, the ferries, the bus station and train station. The 333 bus takes you to Bondi beach for about £5 total. The ferries take you to Manly and Watsons bay etc for about £8 total. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. The place feels like a hotel rather than a hostel. The rocks area is safe but pretty touristy. It was about a ten/ 15 minute walk into the shops In the city (think Oxford street). The hostel room has almost like a long cabinet split into 4 sections. Each section is for each person for their belongings. It’s deep like a big cabinet so that you can empty your case and put all your clothes in it (although it could do with shelves in it!) It then needs to be padlocked up so bring your own big padlock (ie not a small suitcase lock but a Normal size one). Your empty suitcase can then sit next to your bed. Light by bed and also a phone charge there for a phone charging cord. Bring Australian adaptors for any other devices such as straighteners etc. We seemed to have a hairdryer in our room the whole time but I’m not sure if someone had paid to have it in the room from reception or whether they are just in the rooms?? The hostel had lots of foreign student type of visitors, families and solos. Mostly late twenties, and older so not so much late teen age etc. Water foundation for drink bottles near kitchen. I didn’t use kitchen but it all looked lovely etc. Lovely roof top and views and some really lovely bar staff up there too. Bit windy up there sometimes though! I would def recommend. Really good value for money. Thanks YHA for a lovely stay. Hope this helps someone!
