DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!! 💸
26 Feb 2026
the occidental hotel in sydney CBD is absolutely HORRIFIC. save your money and go to a much nicer place, even if you're staying for a night or twowe booked a room at the Occidental last year as we were staying in Sydney for 2 days before going on a cruise. we saw it was $100 a night and super close to public transport (it's ONLY selling factor), we absolutely regret itwe notified the reception that we would be checking in after hours (as we travelled 13 hours on a train from melbourne), they said that was okay and had everything organised. well we thought they had organised itwe rock up to the occidental around 9pm and call the after hours number. no answerwe tried again about 10 mins later, again no answer. we ended up texting the number and said they'd come down. we expected an employee of the hotel to come down, but it was a RESIDENT of the hotel doing their admin?? I'm so sorry to this resident, she was lovely and super caring but we felt horrible that she was left to deal with the admin to check us inanyways we get to our room on the 4th floor, and we're instantly hit a breeze and the most horrific, moist and damp smell. it's like a mix of mold and glen 20, it was FOULwe noticed that the window wouldn't shut and the blind was broken. If you want to actually get some sleep, good luck!!make sure you BYO pillows!! we were given 2 insanely flat pillows, and no spares available. we had to go to woolworths and buy some??? the mattress had a huge dent in the middle which was super uncomfythe bathroom facilities are gross as!! the bathrooms are tiny and inaccessible, they're not cleaned properly and there's no hot water in the sinksthe showers were awful, the shower room was covered in black mould, barely any hot water and no amenities like soap or shampoo. 0/10the lift is genuinely the scariest lift I've ever used. there's stairs available, but I'm physically disabled so no can do. the lift is like the ones you see in horror movies, the light flickers, it stops moving then starts again, it makes a huge THUD when it reaches the ground floor and it's not always level with the ground when getting in/outthe pub downstairs was open on our last night, the atmosphere was horrific. we had one drink and left because the crowd was super weird. it was full of drunks at 6pmaround 11 pm, the noise from the pub to level 4 was HORRIFIC. we literally couldn't sleep because the walls were shaking, and pub patrons could freely walk up to the accommodation. one patron even had a taccy spew in our accommodation toilets which was lovely! no safety for patrons whatsoever!!we had maybe like 4 hours of sleep from the noise and atmosphere of the pub. the window in our room was broken so we had to deal with the noise all night the occidental claim to be 3 stars, but when you call our your concerns they'll say they're "not" 3 stars yet they come up as a 3 star hotelDO NOT book a room at the occidental!! you'll get no sleep, deal with horrific facilities and have a weird sense of uncomfortableness your entire stay. I ended up getting sick from the mold in our room and in the bathrooms 😝I wouldn't pay $100 a night to feel like this againthe only positives were it's location, it's super close to busses, trains and light rail. easy access to sydney CBD but is it really worth risking your safety and health for that?

Budget accommodation in excellent location
05 Feb 2025
Stayed here for three nights with two children ages five and eight. Hotel was exactly as advertised, which is budget accommodation. We had the en suite room and the set up was great for a family. It had a fridge, microwave, kettle. It advertise that they would not be cleaning the room every day, but they did, which was nice surprise. It is above a pub, but we had no issues with the sound, we were on the fourth floor and there mid week. The one thing I would suggest is changing out the carpets in the rooms, no matter how much they would clean them they were simply too old to get a clean feel. The location is essentially unbeatable in that price range for a family.

Cheap but clean and tidy
05 Oct 2024
This hotel is upfront that there are shared ablutions, no reception desk and is priced accordingly. I arrived early after a trans tasman flight and my room as expected wasn't ready. The staff member I met advised me to come back in a couple of hours and he would get my room done first. Arrived back and got access. The room was clean and more than adequate. The ablution rooms have been upgraded to accommodate modern requirements. Great shower pressure. Fortunately occupation was very low when I stayed so I had the run of the floor. There is limited noise reduction from outside. On a busy night band noise can be heard and the thump of the bass.TV is intermittent as the aerial is rabbit ears. Not all channels can.be sourced and be prepared to.lose picture. My huge negative is the tap water. It tastes vile and recommend using bottled water. This is an old hotel with probably older water pipes in the area. There is a local convenience store nearby. The hotel.is 5 minutes walk from Wyndum train station which gives direct access by train to the airport. Light rail is also onlyb5 minutes away

Most affordable high quality
09 Sept 2024
I stayed at the occidental Friday and Saturday nights 13/14Sept. Booked online based on their own advertising. I was impressed at the quality overall. The share bathroom (very clean and well updated) concept means much more affordable accommodation. I loved the room and the in-room full internet TV which meant I could watch the US Open tennis live and any other app offered program. The elevator/lift was a bonus as I was travelling with a bicycle. I guess most of all I loved the position; walking distance to everything important to me and directly across the road from Wynyard station. Took my bike for an extended Saturday ride with easy access to upgraded Sydney bike lanes (for the most part) made a weekend in Sydney staying at the Occidental a true pleasure and real delight.
