The place to stay for families in Quebec...

    rating20 Feb 2026

We visited Hotel Palace Royal from February 15th through February 19th and stayed in room 1011 (2 adults and 2 children). This hotel has many mixed reviews and I am sure that everyone’s experience can differ based on preferences, time stayed, etc. I will provide my honest opinion of this hotel and our experience. It is important to note that this week was a very busy week in Quebec City – Carnivale just ended and the Quebec Hockey Peewee Tournament was in full force. The weather was mild for the time of year (mid-30’s daily).Overall, we loved it here and recommend this hotel for a stay in Quebec City. Check In / Reservation: Our reservation had a slight hiccup – we reserved a room for 4 people (by mistake) even though our reservation had 5 people on it originally (mother-in-law did not come). We were told that this room could accommodate an additional “roll out bed” – hence why our reservation did not flag it as a disconnect between people count. Anyway, it wound up being fine (even though our kids had to sleep on a pull-out sofa). Check in was quick (room was available an hour early), and they were able to put us up on the top floor and wished my wife a happy birthday (both were noted as additional asks in the reservation). Appreciated that greatly. One weird thing was they charged us for the entire stay upon check in – usually happens on checkout in most places (I think). Parking: This was easy – a bit tight but no different than how it was to park at the Hyatt in Montreal when we went. Found parking on S-3 every day. Parking garage is very dark, however, and need to be careful parking and driving the turns. Cost is $26 per day. General / Location: The hotel is centrally located with easy walks to Old Quebec and all of the “fun” things to do in Quebec (more on this later). The lobby is nice, but the elevator area can get crowded, especially with having separate banks for floors with rooms and then parking (i.e., you need to switch and it creates congestion). As mentioned earlier – a ton of kids for the hockey tournament – most of them were respectful and such, but there was a mentality of “taking over the hotel”. It sometimes was a bit much, but hotel staff appeared to be managing it as best as possible. Snow boots are a must!! Nearly impossible to walk around without them – area is hilly so if you are driving and walking, be cognizant of ice etc. Internet was not great (consistent with other reviews). Pool/Jacuzzi: Great for the kids and adults. Never felt too crowded and there were plenty of times where we were the only people there. Really great ambience and one of the main reasons we booked here. Towels available at the pool. I would note that the website is wrong as it shows limited pool hours – when we got there, we were informed and happily surprised to find out the pool was open 9AM to 10PM daily.Room: 1011 is on the top floor and faces the pool area. Setup is a main bedroom area with king bed, and a living room area with pullout sofa. We originally thought we had booked 2 queen beds plus pullout sofa. There is a microwave, safe, sink, coffee machine, etc. and awesome balcony (with a table and 2 comfortable recliner chairs) that oversees the pool oasis below. I will stress that there were absolutely no issues with chlorine smell, lighting, or noise from the pool. Our room had enough curtains and blinds to block out any light from the pool area, but we did notice some rooms did not have blinds like we did. Take your shoes and boots off outside the room and leave them in the provided tray inside. We learned this the hard way (floors will get filthy!!!). Bed was very comfy. Bathroom very basic – pretty sure we had a small toilet leak. Toilet and shower in same room, and only one switch controls all lights in bathroom – not ideal if someone is in the shower and someone needs to use the toilet. Housekeeping setup is weird here – on a staggered schedule – we asked for things several times like towels, coffee pods etc. and all came very quickly and promptly as needed. TV setup is weird in the main bedroom – its off to the side and not directly in front of the bed. Food / Bars: There are two restaurants / bars on premises. Bar was fun with good drinks and ample options. Kids are not allowed in bar area even though they offer a “Bistro Menu” for food. The steakhouse was ok at best – my meal was good (chicken parm with pasta), but the pizza my kids ordered was terrible (off the Bistro Menu)Things to do / Places to Eat:Walking : Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac / Old Quebec / Dufferin Terrace Toboggan Ride / Funiclaire / Ice Skating at Place D’Youville (free and across the street!)Driving:: Montmorency Falls (15 mins) / Ice Hotel (40 mins)Places to Eat : Sapristi / Saint Alexandre Pub / Au Petit Coin Breton / Poutineville / Cafe Buade / Les Trois Garcons

    Poor customer treatment.

    rating30 Dec 2025

Poor treatment my hotel management regarding several issues. Management does nothing to make things right. Management will not speak to you directly. They have the receptionist place you on hold repeatedly to discuss your issues. They upsale rooms to get rid of their expensive rooms. We tried to eat in the restaurant one evening and were overflowed into the bar. The server was rude and curt to us. Made for a very unpleasant experience. I will never stay at this hotel again. There are other more beautiful and cleaner hotels to stay at in Quebec.

    Comfortable and convenient

    rating25 Dec 2025

This hotel is perfectly and conveniently located just outside the Saint-Jean Gate within walking distance to all the sights and shops in Old Quebec City. The room was a good size and the beds were comfortable. While the room itself could have used some attention in some areas (the bathroom sink was slow to drain and there was constant condensation on the toilet, which leaked onto the floor), overall it was clean and comfortable. The staff were kind and accommodating. We would stay here again!

No internet for 3 days! Ridiculous. I was told that the hotel is full, so the Internet doesn’t work?!?!?!?

    rating29 Nov 2025

This is the absolute worst hotel. I have stated in my life and I travel a lot. Three days no Internet and a lot of excuses and it was dirty.

Can't really fault them for anything, the staff were nice. Clean, spacious room with 2 double beds. Ideally placed for the old town.
