    Hostel in Victoria's Chinatown

    rating26 May 2026

This is a basic hostel in Victoria's Chinatown. The location is key - right in the middle of Chinatown, near Fan Tan Alley, close to the waterfront, Songhees trail, bars and restaurants. They offer both private rooms and dorms. I have stayed in queen bed private room and it was ok. Nothing fancy, very basic, but cheap. They also offer free breakfast, dinner and one drink per day. Its fairly basic food as well, classic breakfast items and stews with rice mostly. I did not partake so cannot comment on the quality of food. Free soda, beer or wine is nice to have. The bathroom was shared but I have barely encountered anyone on my floor. The hostel also offers discounts for several local attractions, and also have lockers to store your luggage (bring your own lock!). I thought the hostel was fairly quiet at night which was nice.

I will definitely be coming back in the near future!

This was my first time staying in a hostel, and the only thing I can say is that this place has got to be one of my new favorite places to go. Even though I stayed for only a couple of days, I loved every second of it!

Terrible sleep experience as a solo traveler . I would not stay here again.

    rating20 May 2026

The main issue was that I could not sleep. Another guest in my dorm was snoring extremely loudly, and I woke up multiple times during the night after already struggling to fall asleep. I reported the issue to the front desk and was told they could not do anything at the moment. They gave me earplugs, but they were basically useless.Later, I was moved to another room, but it was not a proper sleeping arrangement. The room had a sofa and a TV, but there was no proper bed, no sheet, no blanket, and no pillow. I had to go back and take the pillow and cover from my assigned bed just so I could try to sleep. After I finally started sleeping, someone knocked on my door around 6:30 am and woke me up again. For a hostel/hotel, the most basic thing should be giving guests a reasonable chance to sleep. That did not happen here. The staff member was not necessarily rude, but the way the situation was handled was very poor and frustrating. There was also unclear communication about the “free beer, wine, soda” sign. The sign said free drinks from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm, but it did not clearly say “one drink only.” I had a soda earlier and later asked for a beer, but I was told I had to pay. If that is the policy, it should be written clearly.Overall, this was one of the worst sleep experiences I have had while traveling. I would not recommend this place to solo travelers who actually need to rest.

Liked my stay here - the Ocean Inn lived up to its reviews. Staff were friendly and organized , premises were clean, and free breakfasts and dinners were filling and tasty.

Clean rooms, enough washrooms and fun atmosphere! The included breakfast and dinner was really good!
