Do not recommend Paradisus Grand Cana or Meliá Hotel properties

    rating03 Apr 2026

We booked our stay approximately nine months in advance through a travel agent with extensive experience working with Melia Hotel properties. Upon arrival at Paradisus Grand Cana All Suites, our trip immediately took a negative turn.We were informed at check-in that our 13-year-old daughter was considered an “adult,” and that we owed an additional $800 before being allowed to check in. This was despite having booked in July with a confirmed total price. We were also told there had been no policy change—yet we later learned the age classification had in fact changed on January 1, months after our booking. This felt incredibly deceptive and unethical. If a reservation is made and confirmed months in advance, pricing and terms should be honored. Changing a policy after booking and enforcing it at arrival—without any prior communication to us or our travel agent—puts guests in an unfair and impossible position. A 13-year-old does not receive any additional benefits, cannot access adult amenities, and is still sleeping in the same room, yet we were forced to pay significantly more under pressure at check-in.There was zero flexibility, zero accountability, and no willingness from management to help. Every interaction was met with “policy, policy, policy,” with no consideration for the customer experience. No one attempted to make the situation right. Our travel agent, who has referred many clients to this brand, sent daily follow-ups and received no response during our stay. That lack of communication and care set the tone for the entire trip.Dinner Reservations:The reservation system is extremely outdated and frustrating. Guests are required to stand in line at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays—often with 50 to 100 other people—just to book dining for the week. There is one person handling reservations on a computer, making the process painfully slow and inefficient. Waiting an hour or more during your vacation only to be offered undesirable times (such as 9:30 p.m.) or told there is no availability is unacceptable. There is no reason reservations cannot be made in advance or through an app. The system feels antiquated and completely out of touch with modern travel expectations.Even more frustrating, many restaurants appeared half empty during service despite being labeled “fully booked.” This gave the strong impression that availability was being artificially limited, likely to push guests toward the buffet.Dining Experience:Overall, the food was underwhelming and often lacked flavor.Breakfast was particularly chaotic. The buffet is essentially the only option, and it is not equipped to handle the volume of guests. There were long lines for everything, including 20–30 minute waits for made-to-order eggs. Tables were not cleared efficiently, plates were often unavailable, and service was minimal. Coffee service was inconsistent—you often had to ask multiple times—and any additional requests felt like an inconvenience to staff. We dined at Tori twice (hibachi and à la carte). The hibachi experience was enjoyable for the kids, but the Asian fusion menu was disappointing, especially the sushi, which lacked freshness. The steakhouse, Sal, was the most consistent meal of the trip, though still average. Our experience at Lemon Fish was unacceptable. The tuna appetizer was clearly frozen, with visible ice crystals, and both smelled and tasted off. The ceviche was poorly prepared and not representative of what should be expected. On our final evening, we encountered yet another frustrating inconsistency. After ordering Tito’s sodas all week without issue, we were suddenly told our “package” did not include Tito’s and that we would need to pay extra. This was never communicated previously. After spending over $6,500, being told this on our last night felt petty and indicative of the overall experience—nothing is clear until it’s time to charge you more.Service & Atmosphere:Service throughout the resort was consistently poor. Staff often made guests feel like a burden rather than a priority. There was no sense of hospitality or attentiveness.Additionally, the resort is saturated with upselling. Management and staff are constantly present—but not to enhance your stay. Instead, there is a heavy focus on selling upgrades, memberships, and timeshares (Circle program). It creates an uncomfortable and, at times, intrusive environment.Housekeeping was minimal. We never received turndown service, and overall attention to detail was lacking.Resort & Overall Experience:The grounds and accommodations are beautiful and well-maintained. Unfortunately, that is where the positives end.Between the deceptive pricing practices, lack of transparency, rigid policies, poor service, outdated systems, and constant upselling, this resort does not come close to justifying its cost.We travel to the Caribbean multiple times per year and can confidently say this was one of the most disappointing resort experiences we’ve had. We would strongly caution others before booking with Melia Hotel properties and would not return to this property.

    Hardware but poor software

    rating02 Apr 2026

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to stay somewhere that nails the *hardware* but forgets to install the *software*, welcome to Paradisus Grand Cana.Let’s start with the good, because there *is* good. The pools? Fantastic. Clean, plentiful, and never felt overcrowded. The walk to the beach was easy and totally reasonable. And the beach itself—pleasant surprise—no overwhelming seaweed situation, no smell, just nice water and a relaxing setup. Bonus points for the Family Concierge beach section with shaded umbrellas and genuinely comfortable chairs.Speaking of Family Concierge: worth it. Our concierge, Thiana, was the MVP of the trip. She somehow managed to get us the restaurant reservations we wanted, at the times we wanted, every day. Without her, I suspect we’d still be waiting for dinner somewhere. The room was another major win. Spacious, clean, well-stocked, and thoughtfully designed—especially for a family of four. Having a separate master bedroom with a king bed while the kids had their own space was a game changer. Easily five stars on the room alone. Now… the service.I don’t say this lightly: it was consistently slow, inattentive, and borderline indifferent. Not just one bad meal—this was a theme. The highlight (or lowlight?) was the beach restaurant Aquamarina, where we waited an hour and 40 minutes for food. One nearby table actually left *after* their food arrived because the delay was that absurd. You almost have to respect the commitment to chaos.Across the resort, smiles were rare and urgency was nonexistent. It felt like everyone was operating at 0.5x speed.Food was a mixed bag. The buffet was solid overall, though breakfast was basically Groundhog Day every morning. The restaurants, however, were largely disappointing—low-quality food paired with even worse service. The lone exception: the teppanyaki restaurant Tori, which was genuinely enjoyable both for ala carte menu and the experience.Activities were… underwhelming. For a resort of this size, having events capped at around 10 people makes no sense. Most of the time, there just wasn’t much going on. Nightly entertainment followed the same pattern: forgettable. For comparison, we’ve stayed at The Grand Moon Palace in Cancun, and it’s not even close—better service, better activities, more energy overall.Beautiful property, great rooms, strong pool and beach setup—but the service and restaurant experience drag it down significantly.

    Was expecting better!

    rating02 Apr 2026

Honest review: 5* … We recently stayed at this hotel and overall had an okay experience. The location was convenient, making it easy to get around and explore the area. Check-in was smooth, and the staff were friendly and welcoming, which set a great tone for the stay. Carlos from the front desk: no hagas promesas que no puedes cumplir, gran error porque yo… no olvido. Unfortunately, there were some cleanliness issues at the start. One of the walls near the bathroom had a pretty large red stain (it honestly looked like blood). I had to call five times to get it taken care of, and it was only resolved after I spoke directly with a cleaning staff member. The bathroom wall also had a handful of hair on it—pretty gross. Thankfully, after that, the room was properly cleaned and well-maintained.We stayed in a master swim-up suite, which was spacious and comfortable overall, aside from the pull-out bed. There was no privacy whatsoever, as people from neighboring rooms kept walking right across our patio.Food: not impressive at all. It really makes you wonder if this is what management expects guests to enjoy—because I doubt they would accept this themselves. The hotel and landscaping are beautiful, but the food was a major letdown. Unfortunately, that alone is enough reason for me not to return. Excursions were also very expensive and not particularly impressive. That said, I do want to give credit where it’s due. Some staff members truly made our stay better: • Entertainment: Juan — absolutely amazing! AMAZIIIINNNGGG! Gracias! • Bartenders & hostesses: Alejandra, Yamilet, Deanny, Carla, Altagracia • Guest services: Susana — thank you for your support and king words • And a special mention to a pregnant guest service member whose name I sadly forgot—thank you as well!Overall, while the property itself is beautiful, the service inconsistencies and especially the food quality were disappointing. Que pena!

Paradisus Grand Cana - a nice resort

    rating01 Apr 2026

We recently got back from Paradisus Grand Cana and wanted to give back after learning so much from this group. We traveled as a family of five (kids ages 16, 13, and 10) and stayed in a Family Concierge swim-up suite.Travel & ArrivalThe resort is about 30 minutes from the airport. Customs was busy but efficient, and got through in roughly 30 minutes. Had private transportation arranged, which I’d recommend because the area outside customs/transportation is very crowded and chaotic. For departure, things were also smooth. There were lines, but they kept moving. Make sure you complete your Dominican Republic e-ticket. We only needed it at O'Hare International Airport, but it’s smart to have it printed and saved on your phone just in case. Watch a few youtube videos to be prepared.Check-In & RoomOne of the perks of Family Concierge is access to a private check-in lounge, which was a great way to start the trip. We stayed in Building 3 on the back side. Initially, I wanted a swim-up facing the main pool, but we ended up loving the quieter, more private location. It really felt like our own oasis. The suites are a major highlight, very spacious and immediately give you that “on vacation” feeling. Our luggage was delivered to the room, and there was a dessert waiting on the table, which was a nice touch. The swim-up feature was absolutely worth it. Our kids are old enough to enjoy it independently, which makes mornings especially relaxing. While the main pool-facing rooms offer easier access to activities and the swim-up bar, the privacy of the back side worked better for our family.BeachThe beach was incredible; clear blue water, soft white sand, minimal seaweed, and no jellyfish during our stay. Family Concierge gives you access to a designated beach area with loungers. There were plenty available, but getting there earlier gets you closer to the water. There’s drink service, but the bar/restaurant is close enough that we often just grabbed things ourselves. The coconut stand was a hit with our kids. There are quite a few vendors on the beach. Most are friendly, but some can be persistent. A firm “no gracias” usually did the trick. Note: the beach is not directly at the resort—you take a shuttle from the lobby. They run frequently, and we never waited more than 15 minutes. Our kids actually enjoyed the shuttle rides.FoodThe food met our expectations for an all-inclusive. Nothing exceptional, but we always found something to enjoy and never left hungry. If you don’t like something, just order something else; it’s part of the experience. We had no issues with getting sick.Family Concierge We have mixed feelings about the Family Concierge upgrade. Easy communication with a dedicated concierge (ours was very responsive). Access to a nice beach area. The included family excursion was excellent. It ran from 9 AM to noon and included a visit to a local home about 20 minutes away. We learned about cocoa and coffee production, which our family found interesting. I’d say this is best for kids over 7; young children might not get as much out of it. Cons: Restaurant reservations were frustrating. You can normally reserve spots in the morning at the lobby, but Family Concierge guests are told to go through their assigned concierge instead. The concierge could only book same day reservations and often couldn’t confirm times until later in the day. Despite the “extra help with reservations, they weren’t guaranteed. We got reservations 3 out of 5 nights. One wasn’t at our preferred time, and another wasn’t at our requested restaurant. The other nights we walked up and got seated (got lucky), but at later times. This felt like a backward system; if you’re paying extra, you’d expect better access to dining.Resort ActivitiesThere are a lot of younger kids at the resort, especially noticeable during evening shows and lobby events. We visited Fun Republic one night (mini golf, shows, shops). It’s a quick golf cart ride away. With older kids, once was enough. There is a dedicated kids’ water park area on the resort. For our 10-year-old, it felt a bit young; she went down the slides a few times and was ready to move on fairly quickly. It seems better suited for younger children. One thing to note for adults: beer is the only alcoholic option available in that area. However, they do have soft-serve ice cream there, which was a nice perk and actually the only spot on the resort where we found it.Overall, this is a very nice resort. If your budget allows, the swim-up suite is absolutely worth it; it elevates the experience from “great” to “wow.” Family Concierge is more situational. It has benefits, but the dining reservation system was a drawback for us. Really the main reason I opted for it. Lastly; please tip. We saw many people not tipping. While it’s an all-inclusive, the staff works incredibly hard. If you can afford the trip, you can afford to tip. I hope this helps. Enjoy your trip.
