  Not the Holiday Inn anymore.

  I wanted to spend a weekend experiencing the floating tram in Wuppertal. This is why I booked to stay at the Four Essen city Centre. When I booked, I thought I was booking into a four point flex similar style of hotel. I was very surprised, and disappointed, by what greeted me when I arrived. The hotel is tired and extremely dated. I felt like I had gone back to the early 1990s, with my room feeling untouched since that time. However, I will be positive and say that the room was extremely clean. The usual places you would expect to find dust and dirt, were extremely clean and clear. This is obviously a very well looked after hotel, and despite its shortcomings in modernity and room design, it was at least comfortable clean and warm. However, the kind of hotels that I enjoy staying in, means that I would probably never visit this hotel again.   No room given despite reservation and charged for it

  We arrived at the hotel with a confirmed reservation and after a very long journey to be told they didn't have a room available for some undisclosed reasons and we had to find alternative accommodation ourselves. Found out the next morning that my credit card was charged by the hotel for the room they never gave us and we never received the reimbursement of the difference between the alternative accommodation and original booking that we were promised. After several emails and calls, nobody from the hotel has bothered to respond. Avoid, avoid, avoid.   Ok hotel, nice rooms, pleasant staff but location is a bit dull.

  Stayed for just one night. Check-in was easy and staff very pleasant and helpful. Room was a very good size with a separate service area including a microwave. It's not far from the station but the local area is pretty drab, so it's just a very functional hotel rather than a holiday one.   I don’t like to leave negative feedback you’ll see from my previous reviews I don’t often do this but after visiting this Holiday Inn I’ve no choice. On arrival the receptionist didn’t have a booking for us ( yet my husband had the confirmation email ) he was so uninterested his attitude was terrible. My husband is a frequent traveller and member of IHG he offered reception his member number but he didn’t want to know. He allocated us a room which we proceeded to with our dog. The reception area had a leak, buckets and towels all over the floor. The first floor landing was so hot it was uncomfortable. A bucket mid floor and an issue with the ceiling - photo attached. On arrival in the room it was not as expected it is VERY dated. Drawing on the walls. - photos attached Bed made for 1 person so I had to make the bed up with extra items from the wardrobe. The heating wasn’t on yet the room was so hot. We had to open the window as no air Con on in this room. There were Ear plugs in the bathroom ( absolutely needed) photo attached. We had booked this hotel as it advertised a restaurant only to arrive and see it was closed, not ideal after a 10 hour drive. We asked reception about local food places and he couldn’t have been less helpful. My nights sleep was awful noise from outside til 2.30 am it was too hot so had to keep window open.Two positives I will leave on which is why I gave it two stars The shower is really good water pressure nice and temperature good. Breakfast was delicious with a really great selection fruit and hot and cold items, fresh juice was really nice. Would I ever stay again - no Does this hotel require a lot of work - yes It’s possibly the worst standard I’ve stayed in and my husband was terribly disappointed and did express this to reception on check out.   Hotel pretty centrally located in Essen and very close to a large mall.The room I stayed in was large but noise from the street could be heard but not something that bothered me. Bought breakfast one time. Though fine def not worth the money.
