A Deeply Disappointing Experience That Ruined Our Honeymoon Plans

    rating14 May 2025

We had high hopes and excitement while planning our honeymoon, and Diros Hotel seemed like a good choice due to its central location in Athens. However, what followed was one of the most upsetting travel experiences we’ve ever had.I made a reservation via Booking.com on May 10th. At the time of booking, the reservation was clearly marked as refundable. A few minutes later, due to a sudden change in our travel plans (we decided to go to Rome after Greece), I updated the check-out date. Unbeknownst to me, this automatically changed the reservation to non-refundable, without any proper warning or consent. Still unaware of the change in policy, I canceled the reservation within minutes.Despite canceling immediately and not using any service from the hotel, I was charged the full amount of €345. Only €25 (the environmental fee) was refunded. I contacted the hotel directly, explained the situation politely, and asked for understanding — especially since this was a clear human error and the cancellation caused no inconvenience or cost to the hotel.Unfortunately, the responses I received from the hotel were cold, inflexible, and lacking empathy. They repeatedly insisted that “nothing can be done,” showing no willingness to consider the context or timing of the cancellation. Even when Booking.com customer service contacted them on my behalf, they still refused any refund. This entire situation caused deep distress for me and my fiancée. She was so upset that she canceled our entire honeymoon trip. What should have been one of the happiest times of our lives turned into stress and disappointment — all because of an unfair policy change and a hotel that refused to listen or help.I sincerely hope no other couple or traveler has to go through this. If you’re considering staying here, please be extremely cautious. Check and double-check the policies — and don’t expect any human understanding from the management if something goes wrong.I would not recommend Diros Hotel to anyone. There are many better places in Athens that treat guests with care and respect.

Very good for 1 or 2 nights

    rating09 Apr 2024

Two minutes on foot from the nearest underground station (Omonoia), nice staff, room big enough with A/C and a flat-screen TV, toiletries and hairdryer provided. Comfortable beds, enough sockets.Smell from the toilet, but could be avoided by closing the toilet door properly. Wi-fi working, but not reliable at times (especially in the evening).

    Stay away from this property

    rating02 Dec 2023

I’m a very experienced traveler and this was absolutely the worst experience I’ve ever had. The rooms are extremely dirty, filthy, and unsanitary. The hotel itself is very run down and it’s located in a very unsafe and sketchy part of Athens. As a solo female traveler, I’ve never felt unsafe inside my room especially to the extent that I had to block the door into my room with a chair to make sure that I at least hear it if someone tries to get in. I booked it for 5 nights and ran away after the first night, I should’ve just left right away after arriving but I got there at night and didn’t have a back up plan. I kindly asked the staff for a partial compensation for unused nights and they refused to refund anything even when Booking.com got involved. I don’t regret leaving early, it was by far the best decision but I do truly regret financing this establishment. I strongly recommend staying as far as possible from this hotel.

    Very basic

    rating19 Nov 2023

After being told by the taxi driver that this wasn't the safest area in Athens, our expectations for the hotel were rock bottom. Thankfully, this seemed to not be true as, despite being very run down, the area didn't feel unsafe. The hotel is very very basic with only the essential amenities for a night or two. There is not even a kettle in the room. Air conditioning functioned fine but the internal room fuse box made a very loud buzzing sound when the room key was used to activate the electricity. It was so loud we slept with the electricity off otherwise sleep would never have come. Despite this, the bed was comfy and clean. The bathroom could have done with a more thorough clean. The mould stained shower curtain was not great and the generally dated tiles made the bathroom feel a bit dirty. The location of the hotel is okay for walking into central Athens, but still is a good 20 minute walk.Pay a bit more and stay in a decent hotel.
