Location

This historical hotel is situated in the centre of Porretta Terme, a distinctive town along the Reno river at the point where it meets the Rio Maggiore river, and it is surrounded by the Tuscan Emilian Apennines' green hills and mountains. The Apennnine is a territory full of discovery where guests can follow peaceful trails, starting from the town’s centre, for a relaxing walk or a full day trekking tour in the 2 big natural reserves of Corno alle Scale and the lakes of Suviana and Brasimone. Finally, there are the famous cities of art close by, such as Bologna (60 km away), Pistoia (35 km away), Lucca and Florence. The train station is just a 2-minute walk from the business hotel and Guglielmo Marconi airport is around 70 km away.

Facility

The hotel was built in 1904. The hotel has 3 junior suites and 45 double rooms, which are located on 7 storeys and are reachable by lift. The reception desk is open round the clock. Amenities available at the hotel include a cloakroom, a baggage storage service and a safe. Wireless internet access allows guests to stay connected while on holiday.     This is a smart hotel and very comfortable. We did not have dinner but the breakfast was good and staff helpful. The location is wonderfully handy for the station where we arrived from Bologna.     A truly relaxing weekend, surrounded by kindness, courtesy, and attention to every detail. Everything was impeccable. The dinner was sublime, in a warm and elegant setting.     An interesting little town. Nice room, they provide, towels, robe, slippers and swim cap. Great thermal bath, saunas and hammam. The massage was just ok nothing special. Food was good but small portions. If you can get a good price worth stopping over when leaving Bologne and on your way to Florence.     I was at Hotel Helvetia Thermal some months ago and I appreciated my staying. My opinion has been confirmed: everything has been perfect. No remarks on anything. Particularly appreciated the young waitress at the restaurant.

    Lovely, but I bit far off the beaten path for a first visit to Italy

    It is very difficult to write a review of this place, because it was chosen for me as part of a tour and not by me. The hotel itself is lovely, the staff is very friendly and attentive and obviously the spa services are a treat. Loved the spa pool itself after a day of sight seeing. My only drawback, as it is with most hotels these days, is that they use very firm mattresses and theirs killed my back. I wish hotels offered different types of mattresses per floor and gave you a choice. If you were looking to stay off the beaten path, then Porretta Terme could be a good choice: it's a very quaint little town along the Reno river with a variety of shops and restaurants and has some great street art. Having said all this, as a person who was in Italy for the first time, I found that staying in a place that was about a hour and a half away from both Florence and Bologna by both car and train to be a little problematic, especially when there is a high speed train between Bologna and Florence that only takes a half hour. I felt a bit trapped staying so far outside the cities and would have stayed in Bologna if I had it to do over again. I find it's better to stay in a central city and travel outside of it than the other way around. But a more seasoned Italy traveller might prefer Porretta Terme.
