This hotel is located in the elegant and historical Palazzo Malvasia in the heart of the city, near Piazza Maggiore (some 800 m) and the Due Torri (about 150 m), which are the city's landmarks. The train station is approximately 2 km away; Gugliemo Marconi airport is roughly 12 km.

Facility

The hotel was built in 1850. 19 single rooms and 40 double rooms are located on 3 storeys and can be reached by lift. English-speaking staff at the reception desk in the lobby are ready to assist you with check-in and check-out. Services such as a cloakroom, baggage storage service, safe, currency exchange service and cash machine ensure a comfortable stay. Wireless internet access allows guests to stay connected while on holiday. A number of shops, including a supermarket, are great for shopping or just browsing. Additional facilities include a TV room. Guests arriving by car can park their vehicles in the garage or in the car park. Further services and facilities include a babysitting service, a car hire service, medical assistance, room service (for a fee), a laundry service and a hairdresser.     Lovely Hotel, wonderful staff. Just Perfect!

    I had never really stayed in Bologna. I had passed through but this was an opportunity to visit the sites, sample the food and pretend to be an Italian!Hotel San Donato was extraordinarily good! Bang in the the centre of town and with at least 3 roof terraces where you can take coffee and view the really rather wonderful sky-line that is Bologna with its leaning towers, churches and lovely old buildings.My room was pristine clean. The bathroom rather took me back with possibly the most space age shower I have ever used, and again it was spotlessly clean. I had a gorgeous view from my window over the rooftops and early in the morning there was a rather exciting number of birds including a black headed redstart.The reception staff made checking in just a matter of seconds. Both receptionists were keen to help and located for us a superb Trattoria around the corner delivering some of the best Italian food I have ever had the privilege to eat. They were each day cheerful and keen to make our stay as happy as can be.I will miss the Hotel San Donato. It was such a perfect base for our 4 day visit to the wonderful Town of Bologna.

    Disappointing and unprofessional

    Disappointing stay.A garment was permanently damaged by the hotel’s laundry service. Management refused to inspect it or discuss the issue in person and redirected responsibility to the guest’s insurance.There is no bar, no coffee in the room, and no access to coffee before breakfast hours. Breakfast itself is extremely limited.Housekeeping was regular and did their job well, but overall service and accountability were lacking.

    Clean and pleasant hotel in quiet central location

    I spent two nights at the hotel in December 2025 on a business trip. I read the Trip Advisor reviews before I came, and frankly I was a bit apprehensive. But I need not have worried: I found the hotel to be clean, the breakfast food good, and the room was quiet, comfortable and relatively recently modernised. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. Based upon my experience I can warmly recommend this hotel and I would stay here again. It is also very close to the centre of the city. There was a safe and a fridge with soft drinks in the room, but no coffeemaker or iron. One suggestion to the staff: mark the location of the stairs more clearly! It would difficult to find them in the event of a fire when the lift should not be used.

    Okay but overpriced.

    Good and bad points. Bad. The hotel look a little tired. Cracked tiles in the bathroom. The overhead shower was not working. There was no bar. Breakfast was okay but we thought a little expensive. Good points. A very secure car park. Location excellent. Staff very helpful. Perhaps overpriced overall.

    Great hotel, perfect safe location. Booked directly with hotel , a standard room that was super clean with a very comfortable bed . Bathroom was perfect aswell . Had breakfast only one morning , it was fine but felt overpriced and there are so many fab cafes around I wouldn’t bother with it.Would definitely recommend and stay again.24 hour reception.
