LOTS to BEWARE of Before You Book. Please Read....and Plan a Fire Exit Route.

    rating08 Nov 2021

I stayed at this small independent hotel for three nights, though I paid for four. I was not happy to spend a few hours sitting up on a bench at the train station the last night but it was better than dealing with the glowering, unfriendly innkeeper. Check this out:The hotel is located a few blocks from stores, cafes, public transport and is about a half mile from Milano Centrale Station. The area is OK. The innkeeper was fairly friendly at first, checked me in, and directed me to my room on the fourth floor. The hotel has vault ceilings, so the fourth floor is really like the SIXTH floor of a normal building. Be prepared for a multiple workouts. I had to go back downstairs for the wifi password, not long after arriving, so this became an issue right away. He didn't volunteer it upon check-in and he seemed surprised when I asked for it....with perspiration running down my face. The room was basic but quite clean with a TV, lights, single bed, desk and had a shower with bidet. You cannot flush the toilet paper, if you use it. There was a sign above the desk directing you NOT to put your luggage ON the desk, apparently to avoid scratching it. I found it an odd request, but I didn't mind using the luggage rack. The booking website said they had A/C which was true but the unit was seven feet off the ground and there was no way to activate it or control it. I went out shortly after arriving, around 9 p.m. for some food, and when I came back, noticed it took the innkeeper a minute or two to remotely unlock the sliding glass door. He seemed a bit annoyed that I was out until close to 10. I told him I typically go running early in the morning and asked if that was a problem, he became more annoyed and asked that I write down when I plan to leave and return each day. I tried to communicate in basic English that the front desk hours listed on the booking website didn't indicate this would be a problem, but he again lost his patience. He did so nearly every time I tried to speak to him, saying his English is no good. The booking website said the staff spoke English, not that they spoke English but it's bad and they'll get annoyed with you as a result. Also, you have to surrender and obtain your room from him EVERY time you come and go. Not terribly uncommon, but not convenient, particularly given this guy's attitude. The first morning I chose to go out at 8:30 a.m. and go for my jog later, so as not to upset the innkeeper, though it was inconvenient to me. On Saturday, I had to go out at 7:15 a.m. Now mind you, the desk hours are listed as 6:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. and at 7:15 a.m., the sun was already up. Well, the glass door was locked and the outside gates were locked. That's comforting. What do you do if there's a fire? I knock on the wall near the front desk, I hear the innkeeper JUMP UP and he starts saying "MARONE A MIA!'' and shaking his head as he comes out. I said, 'Senore, it's 7:15 a.m., the sun is out, I just need to leave.' He angrily opens both doors for me. Now, think about this, the ONLY obvious way out of this building is the front door. I poked around and couldn't find any other way. It's locked and gated and you CAN'T get out, unless this guy LET'S you out.....which he's not prepared to do....at 7:15 a.m.! Good lord. This is nuts. The last day I was in Milan, I was to arrive by train from Rome at 11 p.m. and depart by train to Paris at 6 a.m. I was afraid at how this guy would react, and was actually concerned that he wouldn't open the door for me to come in OR to let me out in the morning....and there was no way for me to GET out. I told him I didn't want to upset him, I would leave early and asked for a refund of my last's night charge. Answer: NO. I let him keep me money. It was better than dealing with him.If you need a simple, clean place to stay, you're prepared to walk up and down as many as six flights of stairs each time you leave and return and you don't plan to leave 'early' or return 'late,' I think you'll be fine. However, contrary to what you'll read:- The Innkeeper does NOT speak much English.- He is NOT ready to welcome you during the stated hours (i.e. 'MARONE A MIA!!')- The front door is GATED and LOCKED as late as 7:15 and there's no way out but for the innkeeper to unlock it. If you read my other reviews, you'll know I give deference to the staff and quite forgiving but the way this guy made me feel was unforgivable. Beware!

great place to stay in Milano

    rating10 Jul 2019

I am usually don't leaving comments about hotels or other places where I stay, in fact I think that this is first time, but I need to leave comment for Hotel Malta.I was there in june and I enjoyed staying there, place was great, clean and tidy.Location is great, close to Corso Buenos Aires, near hotel there is a metro station Loreto, Duomo is 30-40 minutes in walking distance of the hotel.Room was nice and clean, excelent wifi, bathroom, and all that for 50 EUR a night. And owners were great, very friendly and very nice people (you were great even if on some moments we didn't understand each other, next time my italian will be better :-)).

    Terrible

    rating11 Jun 2019

The double room cost 225€ for one night and it was terrible. No lift to the room, no parking area for the taxi to drop us off and you had to carry suitcases down the stairs to reception and then up to your room. There were no tea or coffee making facilities available. The shower was over the bath and hand held and the bracket to hold the shower on the wall was at waist height. Impossible to wash your hair easily. We could hear everything going on in the bathroom next door and I mean EVERYTHING. You could only use the air conditioning for certain times or had to pay extra. The bed was so hard, the pillows were so thin and no extra ones available. No folder with information in the room. The hotel is in a terrible area, no decent restaurants to walk to and you wouldn’t want to be walking around the area late at night.I can’t believe they charged 225€ for a night in this hotel. I would have thought 50€ would be on the high side for the facilities they offer. AnnaMariaD1167, Proprietario at Malta Hotel, responded to this review Dear Customeryou have booked a double room for a very high season date ..... impossible to find a low-cost room all over Milan (11 June 2019).On booking.com (agency, to which we give a percentage and not a little .....)we list all the services .....no elevator (if you then had so many luggage and hotel needs for 7 stars, you didn't have to book with us).L free air conditioning all night,in the reception there is a refreshment point with coffee, tea and more. Finally, perhaps you have confused a 1-star hotel with a four-star hotel, we do not have a parking lot for taxis. In the area there are many Italian restaurants and trattorias, excellent!

    Clean and modern rooms

    rating12 Apr 2018

I satyed for 2 nights in a single room on the highest floor - there is no elavator, so if you have a big suitcase it would be a challange. The room was modern and clean, with eveything you need. They offer an italin style breakfast - coffee, croissants, jouice and yogurt. The staff is very nice. The hotel is 2 metro stops from Miano Centrale and it takes 15 min on foot.

    Nice but quite expensive

    rating03 Nov 2017

Due to the many international fairs in Milan the hotel prices become (often) quite speculative; 65 euros for one night in a one star hotel without lift is quite unaccountable. The rooms are nice, the staff very helpful and the hotel location is quite good. Enjoy!
