School trip and bad experience
01 Apr 2026
We are a class of 18 students in our third year of high school in Switzerland, on a study trip to Trieste. We stayed at Hotel Italia, which is well located near the city center, with perfectly decent rooms.Upon arrival, a deposit of €20 per student was requested in case of damage. This is understandable, especially as we were a group and most of us are adults. The manager also explained the rules regarding respect for other guests, which is normal. The problems started when one of the receptionists (the manager) repeatedly accused us of running and shouting in the corridors, even though we were simply walking and talking at a reasonable volume, in the middle of the day (around 1 p.m.). From that moment on, her attitude became unpleasant and even aggressive. The second-to-last night, a serious incident occurred: a receptionist entered a student’s room without knocking, using a master key, around midnight. He later mentioned a storm and the fact that the shutters were not closed. Even if this was true, he neither knocked nor explained the situation at the time, which understandably frightened the student. Even in case of a misunderstanding, this behavior is completely inappropriate. In general, we were always careful about noise, including at night. On the last night, some students returned late (around 3 a.m.), sometimes after drinking, but they were accompanied and there was no damage or problematic behavior. The receptionist came up several times, creating some agitation, but the situation quickly calmed down and no one was disturbed.During check-out, the manager shouted at our teachers and made unacceptable remarks, calling us “animals” and “disrespectful,” while misrepresenting several situations (including minor details such as breakfast). She also claimed that “normal people would agree with her.” The manager tried to calm things down, but ultimately supported her position. Ironically, we were accused of making noise, while she herself literally shouted at us.The staff also mentioned complaints from other guests and surveillance footage, without any concrete evidence (and without sound), and claimed that the receptionist had knocked before entering the room, which is false. An “apology gesture” (a small box of chocolates) had even been given, which shows that an issue was acknowledged. Finally, the €20 deposit per person (€360 in total) was withheld, based on these accusations, even though no damage was found. At check-in, it had clearly been stated that this deposit was only for potential damage to the rooms. Conclusion:We are deeply shocked by the staff’s attitude, the unfounded accusations, and the unjustified withholding of the deposit. We are used to traveling and have never experienced such treatment.

Very clean ,centrally located hotel. Rooms were spacious, clean and with very modern bathrooms. Staff at Reception, breakfast room were very friendly, professional and attentive. Drinking water was available 24/7 in the Café bar in the lobby and was very much appreciated. Continental breakfast with a good variety of fresh food. Supplies were quickly replenished. Airconditioning centrally controlled and restricted by Local Government Regulations. Would stay here again. Good value for money.

Big Mistake
03 Aug 2023
I made the mistake of staying at Hotel Italia because it was one of the few hotels in Trieste that still had rooms available at the last minute. That was the first warning sign. The second red flag was the less than gracious welcome that I received from the nighttime desk clerk and a badly-dressed ruffian who I was told was the hotel’s security but looked like he was just released from prison. The poor manners of the staff weren’t limited to them - the morning clerks were just as rude. The place looks, feels and smells more like a hostel than a 3-star hotel. The hotel entrance - it can’t even really be called a lobby - is shabby, dim and ill-maintained. My room was no better, with scuff marks on the walls, depressing faux-wood furniture and cheap curtains. The television screen had fingerprints on it and the toilet seat cover was covered in marks/engrained stains. The breakfast was a small selection of not-fresh, highly-processed low quality crap that makes you think “maybe I’m not hungry this morning after all.” Normally, for an experience this low caliber I would have expected to pay 60-80 euros at most. At the Hotel Italia it costs a whopping 141 euros for one person. If you like overpaying for a stay that will leave you feeling depressed, taken advantage of and a little unhygienic then Hotel Italia is the place for you. Otherwise find someplace - anyplace - else.

Dear Exxcelsior,We thank you for your review and for the time you spent to write it.I am sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay at our hotel. As I told you at the reception last Friday, it is high season in Trieste and our hotel is a well rated 3-star hotel, located in a convenient location in the city centre and near the railway station. Our rates are in line with the market.Prices: as you came in you wanted to pay less but there wasn't any cheaper hotel in the city at that moment (it was 11 pm). Room: you got a nice quite and comfortable room, in your pictures everyone can see that the bathroom has been recently renovated and that the room itself was clean.Breakfast: I asked my colleague from the restaurant if you had breakfast, he told me that you went there, had a look at the buffet and went away without sitting or tasting anything. You know, I personally do the grocery shopping everyday and I can guarantee that we offer a large variety of fresh and high quality food and drinks. Check-out: at the check out you insisted to pay cash and gave us a damaged note. As we kindly told you we couldn't accept it, you became upset and yelled that we hadn't been friendly with you.Honestly speaking, I think that you were unhappy and prejudiced against our hotel from the beginning of your stay.Your manner has made me really sad, our family has been running our hotel for almost 50 years, Hospitality is our life. Everyone here is first of all a person, we are all kind and humble, we do our best to satisfy our guests' needs/wishes and to make them happy. We strongly struggle to keep our historical building neat and comfortable every day of the year.I sincerily hope you will find peace within you Best wishesBrunella PoliOperations Manager

Can I make it a hundred stars please?
26 Nov 2022
We found this cosy hotel well priced and oh so quiet and certainly a 5 star rating for the price. All the staff spoke excellent English and were unfailingly courteous. There’s a lift that helps if you have heavy luggage to manage. I think we paid around £80 a night for two and their help yourself breakfast came in at less than a fiver each. Brekky was ace - great coffee, juices, hams and cheeses, 3/4 varieties of jams, croissants, fresh fruit, cereals, yogurts and I’m sure I’ve left stuff out. The bedroom was well furnished, the shower could get to super hot and the entire place was spic & span clean. It’s pretty central and a 5 or so minute walk to the James Joyce statue in one direction and about the same the other way to the main Trieste train station. But now I must note my gratitude to the folks who work here. This was 5 star priceless. I arrived here weak and ill, discharged from a local Trieste hospital after 40 hours, having been food poisoned on an MSC cruise ship and dispatched from their ship hospital (where I was very well treated) to the hospital. My wife on the other hand was left by MSC to struggle on the dockside as the Armonia sailed away, just as the sun set, with most of our luggage still aboard. That’s a whole other story and we did re - board ship a week later in Venice. The only reason the ship docked in Trieste was high winds in Venice. On early morning arrival here from hospital to check-in we were offered cappuccinos and pastries while our room was prepared and it turned out these were complimentary. They knew we were coming and that I’d been hospitalised. Thereafter they helped us beyond our ability in words to thank them for all their kindnesses. I mean if Italy has an honours system for those who help others these gentle people deserve to be top of the list. One day I needed a doctor to get a fit to travel certificate and the young man at reception put in 14 phone calls for me including waiting on call backs. Over an hour later he achieved what I needed - just pause to think about this - over an hour and he dealt with other calls and guests too. What he did we simply could not have achieved by ourselves. My wife and I were just stunned at this humanity which came with a smile. Then he announced he needed a coffee and promptly proceeded to make all three of us cappuccinos offering fruit and pastries again all on the house. They translated for us, including medical papers, organised many taxi rides including one to Venice and could not have done more. So we can’t recommend here strongly enough. We truly were in great need and they delivered 100% and y’know we’ll never forget the humanity and all we could do was say thank you and we said it a lot.

A very pleasant 6-day stay at Hotel Italia in Trieste at the end of January 2020

A had a business-solo trip to Trieste at the end of January 2020. It was my first time in Trieste. I chose Hotel Italia and I'm glad I did. Hotel Italia is very close to the Trieste Centrale train station. Breakfast was very good. The hotel staff was very kind and helpful.
