  Totally Disappointed in the Catalonia brand

  We are not strangers to the Catalonia family. With over 30 stays at multiple locations; I would say we truly love the resort. That is until this trip. We requested an upgrade prior to our arrival via email; which circle members SHOULD get. Upon check in we were told there were none to be issued. I showed them on their website there was multiple rooms in our upgrade category available; however Erik, the "deputy manager" proceeded to argue with us and tell us multiple reasons why we could not have one. Fine. Head to our assigned room. I specified a KING room as my husband is 6'5" in our original reservation as well as an email a week before arrival. We arrived at our room with the bellman to find we were assigned 2 double beds. So, we headed right back down to the front desk to be told there were no king beds available. We found a room on their website that was an upgrade for us with a KING bed at which time we OFFERED to pay the difference so we could have a king bed. Again, we were told by Erik, "the deputy manager" that that room did not exist. HUH? You're advertising something that doesn't exist. So if someone booked that room, showed up at the hotel, they would not get what they reserved?? He then proceeded to tell us that it was dirty and needed cleaning. We offered to wait but he said it couldn't be done at that time or until tomorrow. My husband was ready to give them their bracelet back and go next door to the Majestic. (which I was tired and didn't feel like dragging luggage that far but looking back I wish we would have) So we went to our original room that we were assigned and made the best of a crappy situation. Food was average. Reservations to restaurants were hard to obtain. The buffet basically repeated the same entrees every night and breakfast was a free for all. Everyone - everywhere and no one could access the entrees. We sat on the privileged side and we were lucky if we got one drink with our meal. Most of the time we had to hunt someone down to bring us something to drink. After the crazy breakfast, we decided to go to Beloved every morning for breakfast which was awesome and Wendy was always there to give us top notch service! We are huge tippers and sadly we brought home more cash that we paid out this trip due to the lack of service at the buffet and several of the al la carte restaurants. The beach wasn't horrible. Yes there was sargassum, but they kept it cleared up except on Sunday. We don't get bent out of shape over mother nature if its tolerable so we didn't mind the beach; as did others there. Housekeeping was a hit or miss. We never once got turn down service which is unusual for privileged guest. (other Catalonia locations we always get turn down service and fresh towels nightly) Each night we put a tip out for the turn down housekeeper, each night they didn't come.....As stated above, this is not our first time at a Catalonia property. Its not even our first time at this one; however this will be our LAST trip to this location all because Erik, the "deputy manager", thought it was easier to argue and belittle his guests than to try to accommodate them. We have plans to return to the Costa Mujeres location end of July and will be staying at the Majestic Mirage. Will we pay more, yes. But with this location, you truly get what you pay for. We'd rather pay more and stray away for the Catalonia brand than to be disrespected by this location again.

  We were in Mexico, Catalonia Costas Mujeres to celebrate my husband's birthday and we are very pleased with the hotel, food and staff. Shout out to Joshua and Nathaly who went above and beyond to make sure my family was happy. They made my husband's celebration special and memorable. Thank you so much Joshua and Nathaly.   Inconsistent Service

  We stayed at this resort 5/31-6/5. We started our vacation off on a sour note dealing with the reception/check in. We arrived at the hotel around 11am. They told us our swim up room was not ready but it was in the sun and it was located in a very peaceful location. Then we were told the room that we were assigned with bunk beds was not available because the bunk beds were broke. Then we were told the bunk beds were for little kids only (7 and younger). Then they told us that they would email us when a similar room was ready. We were told that the resort was at 100% capacity and we would have to take a king and a pull out couch. Not very ideal for a 16 and 18 year old. Later we realized that the resort was not anywhere near capacity. Another lie. As we were leaving checkout, the vacation club person met us and showed us where we could get some food. She said to come back to her so she could give us our free beach bag and coupons when we were done. Of course when we get back to get the “free” stuff we had to sit through a breakfast for the vacation club. One of the “free” things she offered was hydrotherapy for 2. This is already included with the privileged club so that was aggravating. We of course declined. We checked our email and checked back with the desk periodically and was told to come back at 3. They did not have the privileged special early check in or privilege lounge like they were supposed to. Went back to the counter at 2:56 and was told the room was not ready and to come back at 3. At 3 the room was as magically ready. Don’t lie and say the room is not ready especially when we supposedly had “privileged” early check in if available.The room we got assigned had 2 queens and the pullout couch. At least we all had a bed. The room was at the party pool with the booming of the speaker and annoying ladies voice yelling all day. Not peaceful at all. Also the swimout was one of the only ones at the resort that had no privacy from the walkway. Every person who walked up the path had a clear view in our pool. We did not have any towels in the room for our swimout. We asked at the front desk and was told we were supposed to have beach towels in the room for the swimout. They basically told us to go get them ourselves. Then we were hassled by the towel guy asking for towels for our swim up because they were supposed to be in the room. Dreams resorts would have delivered them to our room!!We were told the room service app has been “broken” for months. No printed menu anywhere. They said just call and they will tell you what they have. We called once and no one answered. The 3rd night room service was “fixed”. We were still having trouble with the app after it was fixed. We called the front desk and the person answered didn’t help at all and just said use the app and hung up. The room service menu was very limited. Power was out for about 45 minutes the first night and flickered on and off several times over the week. The internet was out for 24 hours and then was up and down during our stay. This was only a problem for us because we had to pay online for our excursion.No wash clothes were left in the room after the first cleaning. No shampoo was in the shower either when we arrived. Never had an extra rolls of toilet paper. We had to take it off the cleaning cart several times. Also asked for another pair of slippers since there were 4 of us in the room and we were given 3 pairs. Never got those either. I left notes for the requested items written in Spanish.Mosquitos were bad at the resort at night. Two of us were bit up. I had at least 25 bites from 2 nights.The bathrooms constantly had small annoying gnats flying in the bathroom area all week. We assume they were coming up from the drains. The showers went from hot to cold water during a shower. They did not stay at a constant temperature. One minute is was hot and the next it went cold.The food was just ok at the restaurants and the buffet. The steak restaurant had good food and service. The Italian and BO restaurants were just ok and the service was really slow. The food came out a different times at these two restaurants instead of served together.We had a few great waitresses Jaqueline and Lynda were 2 of them. They kept our drinks full while we were in our swim out pool. We’ve been to over 9 all-inclusive resorts in Mexico. The service here is very inconsistent. All of the other raving reviews on here all reference the great butler service. These people who get a butler are in the vacation club, so of course they cater to those people.
