  Nice hotel but not five star

  Review: Porta da Oura – Great rooms, good value, but inconsistent dining.We recently stayed at Porta da Oura in the Algarve on an all-inclusive basis and overall had a very pleasant stay.RoomsOur fourth-floor room was quiet, spacious, and more like a mini apartment, with a separate bedroom, seating area, and kitchenette (microwave, fridge, hob, coffee-making machine). It was clean, modern, well air-conditioned, and had useful extras like USB charging points. It was noticeable though, that even though there was a kettle, there were no supplies for making tea or coffee—so we had to bring our own. The only downsides were slightly uncomfortable beds and a poor shower setup.All-Inclusive DiningBreakfast was excellent with a great selection, and the coffee machines were a real highlight, producing superb hot drinks. Lunch and snacks were also very good, and the included cocktails were enjoyable. Drinks on tap (lager, wines, soft drinks, and squash) were a nice touch.Evening DiningEvening dining was the weakest part of the stay. The buffet was inconsistent, and on one occasion the options felt incomplete (e.g. vegetables without a clear main, or pasta without sauce).Speciality DiningOne of the selling points of the all-inclusive offering is the ability to book speciality restaurants, which are meant to provide a different, more serviced experience compared to the buffet. However, we tried two of them and both were subpar.The BBQ grill in particular was very disappointing. Three starter plates were brought out for seven diners, which left us confused as they were not designed for sharing in that way. When the main course arrived, it was a large tray of meats but without any serving tongs, meaning people had to use their own cutlery or hands, which felt quite unhygienic. In the end, we chose to leave and return to the buffet.Booking these restaurants was also quite difficult, which added to the frustration.AmenitiesThe hotel offers access to facilities at two other nearby hotels, which is a great bonus. These include additional pools, saunas, jacuzzis, games rooms, and children’s play areas. However, we did experience some issues accessing certain areas, as our room key would not always allow entry. When we raised this at reception, the response was unhelpful—we were simply told to wait and follow someone else in, rather than the issue being resolved.StaffThe staff were generally friendly

  We loved our stay!! Very kind and helpful staff, that guided us on everything we could want or need throughout our stay. Food was not bad for an all inclusive, but we didn’t enjoy the Mexican or Chinese. We loved the BBQ and the theme nights were a delightful variation for each day.
