Geared Toward Groups, Less So for Individuals

    rating30 May 2025

We stayed at Hotel Castro and were somewhat disappointed with the experience. We arrived around 1 p.m., hoping to settle in and enjoy some of the amenities. While the on-site café seemed designed with pilgrims in mind, it had already begun to wind down by the time we got there. It felt like we had missed the main pilgrim crowd for the day, and the place felt a bit deserted afterward. The hotel appears to cater more to coach tours than individual travellers, and that was reflected in the atmosphere and service. That said, the evening meal was a real letdown — poorly prepared and lacking flavour. It felt like an afterthought, with little care put into the food or service.Overall, the hotel may work well for large groups on a schedule, but independent travellers — especially pilgrims — might not find it as welcoming or accommodating as other spots along the route.

Nice hotel on Camino de Santiago

    rating31 Oct 2024

This was a stop on the Camino de Santiago. Nothing special about the hotel. They remodeled everything so it is all new. I'm happy I stayed here because it is right on the Camino de Santiago path---the path is literally right behind the hotel. Nice stay.

    Do NOT recommend

    rating07 Oct 2024

Horrible hotel. Front Desk staff was not helpful at all and demanded I speak Spanish to them. When I asked for a bottle of water to be able to take medication they ignored me for almost 15 minutes before getting a bottle and charging me 2 Euros for it. I asked them to call a Taxi for my husband and I, and was pointed to the number of the local taxi company on a bulletin board. They could not even give us the correct country code to make the call. The room was musty and sub-standard. The intercom panel on the bed from the Seventies was smashed. The walls are so thin that you can hear everything going on in the adjacent rooms. The "restaurant" is closed on Saturdays and Sundays (???). The location is far from the city center, and it is very difficult to get responsive taxi service. The couple of times we tried Uber, there were no rides available close-by. Unfortunately, it was the only decent priced hotel available during our time there, so we dealt with it, but would not ever go back. The only positive - the fruit stand on the main road in front of the hotel.

    Not for me

    rating11 May 2024

In the middle of nowhere located next to a busy road. Nothing but a restaurant and a greengrocer next door. Typical hotel built in the 90's and still has the 90's vibe. The staff was not very friendly. Room basic large, clean with a good bed. Internet is good. The walk-in shower is made in a bathtub. Creative solution, I guess. The food was horrible. Worst breakfast I ever had in Spain and dinner wasn't nice.

    AVOID!!!

    rating04 Oct 2023

Where to start?? Hotel is clean, that’s about it. 5km from centre of Santiago so need a car.A/c advertised doesn’t work, of course! It is ancient. Fridge in room is warm, use it as a cupboard to store your shoes, that’s what we did!The ‘restaurant’ inside the hotel is, at best, a cafeteria. Don’t expect to get a pre-dinner drink; they don’t have anything!!!! Tube lighting complete the general decor, very 1973!!All in all, cheap, dated and unwelcoming place. Staff totally indifferent at best, rude mostly. It’s cheap,ok but still…Will NEVER go there again and will tell everyone we know not to either!!!
