    Shocking

    rating12 Jun 2015

I booked an apartment for me, my partner and toddler. When we arrived in the apartment it was terrible... cobwebs, rusty moulded taps in the kitchen, bad smell in the bathroom and huge cockroaches. I complained and we got another room which was just as bad. The bath-tub was stained and dirty. We had our room 're-cleaned' again but not much improvement. I had read reviews from 2013 and wanted to give this 'hotel' the benefit of the doubt.. BIG MISTAKE especially with a child. They didn't have a kettle, toast and basic kitchen stuff. Came home with cockroache bites. I was ignorant to reviews, don't make the same mistake as me. Wouldn't even give it a 1 star rating. Disgusting 'hotel'

    Absolutely Terrible

    rating16 Sept 2013

I booked apartment 2078 for four days 8th Sept to 11th Sept 2013. I actually booked it with a Tunisian Friend accompanying me ((thought this would help me not get ripped off) and it was obvious that the last occupant had only just moved out and the apartment had not been cleaned.I have been treking in Bolivia and been to a few "developing" countries hotels but I have to say this was shoddy, very dirty and I think not good if you have OCD like me. Disappointing. Even my Tunisian Friend was shocked as he could not cook for me as there were no pans or plates - not even a bottle opener. Take a Swiss Army Knife! As stated above there were no pans to cook with, there was minimal cutlery and the bathroom was filthy. The previous occupant had left his t-shirt in the bathroom (nice) and some washing powder which was great for cleaning the sink and bath especially left overnight to soak in the bath. Better than Cillit Bang anyday. The shower curtain and shower/ toilet mats were rank and needed to be burned, they were black with dirt. When I had a shower you could see the dirt running out of the shower curtain so made sure it hung outside the bath. The bed had no mattress protector and there were no clean towels. Had to wash the towels which were not plain white "hotel towels" but I suspect left again by the previous occupant. I would advise you to take your own. or buy a cheap beach towel from the supermarket up from the Golf Brau Pub. The room did have air conditioning but it had only one setting and there was no duvet or blanket so had to turn it off as otherwise it was freezing. Can you believe this I was actually freezing in tunisia. Please note no cleaning was done by any staff (only me) while I stayed there. Yes it was noisy due to the funfair not ending till 1am and it was funny listening to the fountain lights music (Pavrotti) competing with arabic dance music. i paid 60 dinar for three nights when i could have just paid 60 dinar for half board at the Golf Residence where I'd stayed before and was fine.Positive was that the water was very hot for the shower and it located in a central place. You should get what you pay for but definitely not in this case. Think they give you better rooms if you are a family as tunisians love family/family life and kids.

Basic accommodation in a very noisy location

    rating23 Sept 2012

I felt I should add a review of Les Maisons des Jardin because, even though I had actually booked a week in a one bedroom apartment at Les Maisons de la Mer for myself and my husband, the apartment we were given was so bad that we complained and were moved to accommodation on the Les Maison des Jardin part of the complex. My review of the Les Maison de la Mer apartment can be found under that accommodation heading. Les Maisons de la Mer is the complex near the beach and mariner, Les Maisons des Jardins are the apartments around the fountains and the fun fair across the road from the mariner. The apartment that we were moved to overlooked the fun fair. It was basic accommodation, with bathroom, a small kitchen area, the sleeping and living/dining area was an open plan arrangement. It had air con which we were grateful for and we would have struggled without it. It wasn’t immaculate, but the bedding and towels were clean and it was acceptable. The maid came most days only missing 2 days out of the week we stayed here. The shower actually was better than it looked. The water pressure was great and there was always plenty of hot water. The bathroom was starting to look like it needed some attention, the grouting and sealant around the bath and sink was just starting to discolour. The kitchen had basic utensils, a couple of pans, basic cutlery and crockery. There was no frying pan or items such as tin openers or spatulas, but it was enough to make breakfast and sandwiches. The fridge wasn’t the newest of appliances, but it worked really well. We avoided using one of the electric rings on the hob, something had obviously boiled over on it and I think it would have created a bit of a smell if we’d used it. The main issue I had with this apartment was the proximity to the fun fair which was open until really late. Friday through to Sunday they had extra entertainment at a stage area on the funfair for the Tunisians and Libyans that were holidaying in Port el Kantaoui. They must have been able to hear the female host down at the beach, it was so loud and went on until 1am in the morning. Luckily the other nights during the week we just had noise of the funfair, which was still quite loud but not as bad. Our balcony overlooked the bumper cars. The pool at the back of our apartment was overgrown and abandoned and the general access areas quite run down. There was a pool across at the Maisons de la Mer complex which looked very nice but, as it was full of kids, we spent most days on the beach, which was around a 10 minute walk away.On our last day, we weren’t flying home until very late at night and had to check out of our room at 11am. We asked if there were any facilities we could use to take a shower before going to the airport. We were given the keys to another apartment that was still on the ‘des Jardins’ part of the complex but overlooked the fountains. It was a one bedroom family apartment with a bathroom and extra toilet, plus 2 single beds in the living area. The air conditioning didn’t work and it got quite hot in the short time we took to have a shower and freshen up. Also I noticed that there was only air con in the living area of this apartment and not in the separate bedroom. Although this apartment didn’t overlook the fun fair you could still hear it, just not quite as loud.We didn't pay much for the apartment, so the standard of accommodation didn't surprise me, it was on a par with similar rooms that we have stayed in whilst on holiday in India. I've marked it down because of how unbelievably noisy it was.The general location of the Maisons de la Mer and Maisons des Jardins was really central to everything, but I would not recommend these apartments as it’s a lottery what standard of room you get and whether it will be in a quiet part of the complex or a very noisy location. Looking around the area you can tell from the outside of the apartment blocks that some have been recently refurbished and others are in dire need of attention. I would not stay here again!
