  Disappointing Christmas Function – Poor Hygiene, Overpriced Drinks, and Lack of Atmosphere

  We attended The Fregate Hotel for our work Christmas meal with around 80 colleagues, and unfortunately the experience was far below expectations.Hygiene Concerns 🚫During the meal, I witnessed a waiter use the urinal and leave without washing his hands.The toilets had no standard hygiene signage reminding staff and guests to wash hands, which is especially concerning during peak flu season.This gave the impression that neither staff nor management prioritize basic hygiene standards.Bar & Drinks 🍹At our private function bar, drink prices were not displayed anywhere, nor mentioned when ordering.A small Malibu and Coke cost £10.06, a pint of Coke £6.60, and a pint of beer £7.80 – the most expensive drinks I’ve seen in Guernsey, with nothing special added (no lemon, lime, or garnish).Despite being a private booking, staff allowed members of the public to enter, buy drinks, and sit at tables. One guest even complained her champagne was flat and warm.Dining Experience 🍽️Water was served in glass jugs, warm and tasting like tap water. No bottled still or sparkling options were provided, which is below the standard of even basic restaurants.My turkey main course was very dry, accompanied by a small, pre-fabricated stuffing ball with an odd taste.Dessert was a cheesecake that looked appealing on the menu but turned out to be a cheap, prefabricated round with no crunchy base – more like something from a supermarket than a restaurant.Service & Atmosphere 🎭Some waiters displayed odd habits, such as repeatedly adjusting table numbers or tucking napkins onto guests’ laps, which felt unnecessary and awkward.There was no music during the meal, and the table layout was one long line down the side of the building, creating no festive atmosphere.The disco was in a separate upstairs room with no chairs, and we had to supply our own speaker and laptop for music. This setup was poor compared to other venues where dining and entertainment are integrated.Overall Impression ❌The evening was disappointing across hygiene, food quality, pricing, and atmosphere. For a hotel hosting a large Christmas function, the standards fell well short of what should be expected. I would not recommend The Fregate Hotel for similar events, as it lacked professionalism, value, and festive spirit. Simon Dufty, General Manager at La Fregate Hotel, responded to this review Dear Mr de la Haye,I have just noticed your Tripadvisor review of your evening last Saturday and would just like to make the following observations.• Your point of hygiene has been addressed and I apologise for this discretion. `• Our bar price list is displayed behind the bar as required by law, we would never embarrass a client by revealing the drink costs, but if asked, we would have informed you of the cost of what was ordered.• We were instructed that everyone was to pay individually for bar drinks and wine at the table. We always have ample stock of both still and sparkling water; you could have ordered one if tap water was not to your liking.• Your comment on prefabricated stuffing and cheesecake is refuted as all is made freshly by our chefs in our kitchens.• Music was being played throughout your meal, but the acoustics with 76 people talking, laughing and enjoying themselves, this would not have been audible throughout the restaurant.• You will have observed that our restaurant was fully occupied by your party with no room for dancing, but the music was not upstairs. The dance music was not arranged by the hotel but the only logical place was in the adjoining room which seemed to work well for the number of people who wished to make use of this.Yours sincerelySimon DuftyGeneral Manager

  Haven't been to this restaurant for quite a long time as it has lost a bit of it's aura however this time we had a superb meal with faultless non-intrusive service. Back to it's old self if being a bit of a special place to visit.   Really good boutique hotel offering comfort and delicious food

  What an excellent experience we had at La Fregate. Location close to the ferry terminal was superb, the view from our very large and well appointed Bay View room was fantastic, and the food was outstanding. All the staff were very welcoming. We’d love to have stayed longer. Next time, maybe!   Average not worth the cost per night

  Came here for a surprise birthday holiday, booked deluxe room with a sea view. The view was blocked by a tree/bush that had overgrown and blocked 80% of the sea view. We asked to move and looked at two rooms the next day but they were much smaller. So we decided to stay in our non sea view room, no discount was offered considering they knew we weren’t happy. Also room was extremely noisy due to creaky floorboards in room above us which woke us up on a few occasions.We ate breakfast four times in the hotel, every time part of the order was wrong and on two days we were seated near guests who were also complaining their orders were wrong. We had dinner here and food was excellent, service was slow perhaps some would say relaxed. Overall it just wasn’t worth the money it cost. Receptionist was lovely and very helpful so can’t fault him at all.

  The Hotel was immaculate. The rooms were well presented. There wasn't a mini bar however you could ring reception or the kitchen and order room service. They provided a free bottle of Spring water and still water every day. Tea and coffee facilities were good. The bathroom was large and very clean. The staff were fantastic 👏 👌 nothing was too much trouble.The food at the restaurant was amazing. Top quality.
