Great Neighborhood and Location. Quick service

    rating06 Jan 2024

We stayed 8 nights in Babel Botanico, from Dec. 28 to Jan. 4. We just fell in love with this neighborhood, central to all we wanted to see. Some days we had no plan, just walk out the door. Cafes on every corner, fun restaurants, and of course the Botanical Garden, free. It's close to major transportation lines, Las Heras and Santa Fe, to get us to Recoleta or Centro. The apartment itself had all we needed at a good price, and Edgar quickly answered all questions through Whatsapp, including booking transportation to and from the airport. We paid about $55 a night.

Big hidden extra costs to pay when you arrive, and a badly maintained hotel.

    rating24 Jun 2022

We paid 34€ for the hotel on a site called atrapalo.com. It was non-reimbursable. But when we arrived we had to pay another 16€ for "cleaning charges"; this is in the small print on the website and so they dont accept complaints. But it is absolutely scandalous as a way to treat customers.Anyway, there was also black mold in the bathroom. The elevator stopped at the second floor (unless you realised that there was a second control panel in the elevator that did come down to the ground floor). The hot water does work...but we had to go to reception to find out how it worked, and nearly had a cold shower. For 34€ its an OK place to stay in San Thelmo. For 50€ (the real price) its too expensive, in particular when you take into account the poor maintenance of the hotel

OK but could be oh so much better with just a little love & attention!

    rating12 Feb 2019

Just spent a week here and am perplexed as to why this hotel is not way better than it is - as it could so easily be much better! The good points are:1. The rooms are huge. We had a room on the 5th floor facing the car park but that was no problem for us. It was quiet and we could leave the window open all night without interruption.2. The location was fabulous - despite some warnings about the next block we found if you avoided that part, were sensible and took normal precautions, we were brilliantly situated for the up and coming old part of San Thelmo where there were great drinking, eating and shopping places. There is a great indoor market selling everything (including great sit down food stalls); museums, market and street tango dancing. Great place to start your walk to other areas of the city3. The 24 hour reception staff were excellent - helpful and spoke great EnglishBUT there were a few things that really perplexed me:4. The bed linen and towels were grey; they were marked and the towels had rips/ were threadbare and had no fresh smell. The curtains were badly marked on the bottom and the soft furnishings needed a good clean. The handrail on the bathroom wall in the bath had rusty nails and there was no shower slip mat - it was very dangerous getting in to the bath to have a shower. The toiletries were in sachets and were very poor quality. Chips in the cast iron bath had been painted over with white gloss paint and the sealant around the shower screen looked like it had been applied by a three year old. This is easily remedied guys - come on!5. The breakfast was pretty poor. There was no breakfast buffet. Instead you are brought a plate with three bread type croissants (don't go thinking these are anything like the French ones - they aren't!) and a slice of highly processed brown & white bread. There are a couple of sachets of butter/jam together with a glass of orange squash and something described as coffee served from a flask to you. It tasted of rusty water and was I think extremely cheap chicory type coffee substitute. Yuk! If you wanted another (??) you had to go in to the kitchen to ask. There were scrambled eggs that came in a childs plastic bowl but were disgusting - they were clearly made from dried egg powder. I asked if there was any fruit and was offered a banana or apple - not both. I ended up buying fruit and yoghurt myself and cartons of coffee! The breakfast areas unloved - there were plastic bags of rubbish there the whole time we stayed.5. The sun deck needed real improvements, The loungers were falling apart and the pool was very cloudy even after it had been attended to by the attendant. The terrace need a really good clean. This really could be a brilliant hotel with some decent maintenance; linens ; improved standards of cleaning and better quality breakfast offering and toiletries. However, at the moment its only just scraping average in my book. There are better looking hotels in the area that I would visit instead

    Threadbare and needs upkeep

    rating10 Feb 2019

My wife and I stayed there with a group for 8 nights while on a charity project helping to build houses for folks in the outskirts (poorest area with dirt roads). We left each morning at 8:30 and got back at 6:30 hot, dirty, and tired. Here are the good points about the hotel: it is not expensive and is in an edgy area — some say it is “bougie.” There is lots of hot water (virtually unlimited), excellent water pressure, most rooms have little balconies (good for hanging your washed clothes out to dry), the employees are friendly, the breakfast is quite simple but apparently genuine Argentinian fare (lots of bread, canned OJ, decent strong coffee with a small bowl of some scrambled egg and an apple or banana), the beds are firm and the rooms are big.The bad points however, unfortunately outweigh the good because the number one bad point is the air conditioning is old and unreliable and in the summer (Early Feb), that’s a non-starter.When we got there, we were put in a room on the first floor —. There was no A/C and the sliding glass windows would not lock so we moved to another room. The other room was freezing cold in comparison and the first three nights we were there, we had to sleep under the comforter ... which was fine because we like the room cold at night. There are no thermostats in the rooms — the temp is controlled by a central system that the Reception can control. Then the outdoor temps then went up to the 80’s and 90’s during the day and the A/C seeing our floor died. No cool air at night and the temp outside and inside was 90. Not pleasant. IF the hotel had invested in ceiling fans in the rooms, the sporadic A/C would almost be acceptable... but they haven’t done that and judging from other reviews, the A/C problem is not new.Our second room was clean — we never saw any bugs in the place at all — but the towels were all threadbare, a couple had tears in them, there were some rust stains on the sheets, the cleaning staff would routinely forget to leave a roll of TP, or soap, or two hand towels and two bath towels when they cleaned. No box of Kleenex was ever left but hey, that’s why the price is so low. We never used the pool but a friend said the water was cold (even when the temp outside was 90)... maybe that was where all the A/C BTU’s went? Ha, Ha.So, bottom line is you get what you pay for. If the air conditioning had been okay, I would say the place is totally acceptable but since it wasn’t, I cannot say that.

    Filthy room & linen

    rating22 Dec 2018

We booked Babel suite through a travel agent. When arriving at the hotel at 2am after a very long flight were checked into a room with dirty linen, dirty shower and a broken pillow. We then approached the desk the next morning to notify them of the state of the room and they advised there aren't any other rooms. We spent the day looking for a new hotel. When returning in the evening to notify the front desk that we will be checking out the next day, the advised that they will move us. The new room was slightly cleaner. During our 5 day stay our bed was not made up and the towels were never changed. The towels are broken and the pillows are falling apart. Breakfast consists of 2 slices of bread with spread, a fruta and coffee. Really lovely location with lots of potential. This is definitely not a 4*, but has the potential with lots of upgrades.
