  While the room itself was adequate, the main reason we stayed here was for the location but I think there are much better options for the price you pay. You can tell that it is backpacker style with original furniture quite old and carpets worn. The staff were helpful however.

  I have stayed here a few times in a single room with shared bathroom in a very handy location to the city. There is a lovely courtyard area, the rooms & bathrooms have been clean & comfortable and I would definitely stay there again. I recommend University House.

  Worst hotel ever!

  Worst hotel ever! The smoke alarm went off at 730am for no reason at all. The staff didnt know how to handle the situation. They sent a guy over to fix but obviously he didn’t know what to do.The alarm kept sounding off. They told us that they already called maintenance. But maintenance arrived only two hours later. In the meantime the alarm kept sounding off. The hotel didn’t have any in-house maintenance crew and had to rely on the university’s crew. There was no escalation procedures. They lack training and were under supervised. They were so afraid to call their manager. Our concern was never resolved so we decided to leave as fast as can. Our whole day was ruined because of the incompetence of the staff. If you decide to check in to this hotel get ready to suffer leaky bathrooms, old fixtures, under trained hotel staff, poor maintenance of facilities, and unhelpful staff.

  Very restful; conducive place to relax or do work. Very convenient to catch the free Culture Loop shuttle outside the entrance of the National Film and Sound Archive just a stone’s throw from University House. From there you can go to other stops on the shuttle route such as Regatta Point, National Library, Questacon, Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Australia, Parliament House, Canberra Museum and Gallery.

  The hotel was clean with classic furniture. Even the lady toilet has a nice sofa area. The bed was so comfortable that I didn’t even wake up once ( I am a light sleeper who usually wake up a few times per night). The staff were extremely friendly - special thanks to the Asian young lady. She was genuinely nice and really helpful in recommending places to go for food and transport. If the University house get to read this, pls compliment her and convey my thanks to her again! Tips to other travellers who don’t drive - you could walk to national museum of Australia (1.3km) or national film (360m) to catch the free culture loop to visit attractions.
