A Cottage with History — More Than Just a Place to Sleep.

    rating16 May 2026

During our visit to Broken Hill, we stayed at Charles Rasp Motor Inn & Cottages at 158 Oxide Street, Broken Hill, and chose one of the old cottages because we wanted something different from a standard modern hotel room. We wanted to feel a little closer to the history of Broken Hill — and this cottage gave us exactly that experience. This is not the kind of accommodation where everything feels new, polished and anonymous. The cottage has character, age and atmosphere. It feels like a real house with a long story behind it. While staying there, it was easy to imagine the people who once lived in this home many years ago — sitting in the living room in the evening, drinking tea, talking after a long day, cooking in the kitchen, looking after the garden, and passing the house from one generation to another. For me, this was the most special part of the stay. When you travel from one big city to another and stay only in modern hotels, everything can start to feel the same. Comfortable, yes — but often without soul or memory. Here, in this old cottage, we felt that we were staying inside a small piece of Broken Hill’s history. The cottage itself was old, but very well cared for and maintained. It was clean, spacious and cosy. The living room had a warm, homely feeling, and the kitchen was very well equipped with everything needed if you want to cook your own meals. That was especially nice because it made the stay feel more personal and relaxed, almost like being in a home rather than just temporary accommodation. The cottage also had a front yard and a back yard with trees and flowers. Some of the trees looked old, and I found myself thinking that perhaps they had been planted by previous owners many years ago. That small detail added even more charm to the place. It felt peaceful and authentic. The location was also convenient. It was easy to reach the centre of Broken Hill, and several local attractions were not far away. Places such as the Silver City Mint and Art Centre, the Sulphide Street Rail and Historical Museum, Sturt Park, and the Broken Hill Miner’s Memorial are all within a short drive or easy reach. For travellers who want to explore Broken Hill properly, this is a practical and comfortable base. The staff were professional and the property was well looked after. Everything we needed was available, and the cottage gave us a comfortable stay while also offering something that modern hotels often cannot provide — a sense of place. If you are looking only for a brand-new, ultra-modern hotel room, this may not be the style you are after. But if you appreciate history, character, space, comfort and the feeling of staying somewhere with a real past, then Charles Rasp Motor Inn & Cottages is a wonderful choice. For us, it was not just accommodation. It was part of the Broken Hill experience itself.

The staff were mostly extremely helpful. Not realising we had a budget room, I asked an older receptionist for extra towels as our shower had no screen or curtain. It was impossible to shower without the bathroom flooding.I have never been spoken to so rudely. It spoiled our 3 day stay.Cleaning staff were fantastic.

A great place for a long stay

We spent five enjoyable night here and the staff were friendly and accommodating with excellent housekeeping. . It is not a modern motel but our executive room was stylish and spacious with plenty of storage space so we could unpack most of our stuff rather than live out of the suitcase. There was also a dedicated work space and dining table and sofa. Our only grumbles were the sofa was too worn soft for us to use to be comfortableAlso the hot water was so hot when it came through we had to be really careful controlling the temperature to avoid to being scalded in the shower.

The whole reception, ease of booking and the room were all exceptional. Bed super comfy and the shower facilities were amazing. I happen to have left a component of my cpap behind and house keeping noticed it passing it on to management and contacting us. It was an important part abd they were so good to post it up to us.Actions above and beyond. Thank you for doing that for us. Cheers Daz

We booked the 2 brm family suite and I have to say, it was not in our top 10. Little things spoiled our stay. Power points in brm 2 were on the opposite wall from the bed heads and there were no bedside tables or lamps which made it difficult to traverse in the night to the bathroom, charge mobile phones, ipads, etc. These are necessary in 2024.To enter the suite, 3 doors open up on each other, therefore to enter, you have to then close that door to open the cupboard/beverage making bar and then you have to close that door in order to open the bathroom. Once you get into the bathroom, there is no shower door - no curtain, no nothing. Consequently, the bathroom floor is awash!!
