Highly recommend a stay at Desert Cave Hotel!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Desert Cave Hotel. It was a great experience to sleep in our comfortable underground room. They had an onsite cafe/bar which was open all day from which they offered a complimentary coffee (for each person each day). This was on top of the complimentary tea and coffee supplied in our room. We were also offered discounted meals - breakfast (in the cafe) and dinner (at the near by Opal Bistro). Very pleasant staff and complimentary airport pickup was very much appreciated. I'd highly recommend a stay at the best hotel in Coober Pedy!

The best for that underground room experience.

The staff here are very friendly and helpful. The driver of our airport transfer loaned my grandson a shovel and sifter so that he could do some noodling during our stay which made him very happy and excited. When visiting Cooper Pedy you want to experience a room accomodation that is underground and the Desert Cave Hotel is one of the best. The rooms are a good size and have the basic fridge, coffee - tea making provided. You will not find air conditioning in the underground rooms as the room temperature ranges between 21 - 24 degrees all year round. They do have fans for those rare occasions in summer when you may feel the heat. The internet is very hit and miss but that could have been because we were in an underground room. They have on site dining for breakfast but you have to go elsewhere for lunch and dinner.Unfortunately the shower has low water pressure and trying to adjust between too hot and too cold takes a lot of time. It is a big disadvantage for the rating of this hotel. The beds are a bit hard and you get an assortment of hard and soft pillows. They do not make up your room daily so if you want clean towels you need to get them from reception, they have pool towels to.You take do a quick walk through their free museum display that goes under the complex. The hotel is within walking distance of other dining experiences, the local IGA and lots of opal shops for any shopping you may want to do.

    A safe and central location

    rating16 Jun 2025

We stayed 3 days. It was value for money. The room is big, clean and well stocked with quality beverages, kettle and ample toiletries. It is centrally located. The young man in the reception was very friendly and polite. He gave us coffee vochers and directed us to the attached cave museum cum cafe which was awesome. The car parking was close to our room, too. The IGA, Catholic Church, petrol stdtions and restaurants were within walking distance.

A unique stay that just needs a few tweaks to be great

    rating02 Jun 2025

I was really looking forward to staying here, but the overall experience didn’t quite match the price. The idea of a cave hotel sounds super unique, but the room I got felt more like an old motel than an underground retreat, kind of outdated and not as special as I expected.Wi-Fi in my room didn’t work at all, which made it tough to look things up or plan the rest of our trip. I get that not every room is the same, but it’s definitely something to improve. For the price, I was hoping for a bit more comfort and a stronger cave vibe. The location is great and it’s such a cool concept, so with some room updates and better internet, this place could really shine. Just didn’t feel worth the cost this time.
