    Cheap, Central, Safe but HOT

    rating03 Nov 2024

Flashpackers hostel is cheap, central in location, safe and allows a mix of international and Aussie tourist’s to stay but it’s HOT!! This is the second time we’ve stayed @ Flashpackers! A warm and friendly welcome has always greeted us at the front door and the lovely receptionist was helpful in organising transport for us! However beyond the front reception area and the wonderful staff who’ve run this hostel over the years. Is now a very tired building….. It’s disappointing to see that years after our last stay the entire establishment has declined in quality and atmosphere! It’s disappointing that our memory of a thriving hostel is now just a quiet, unkept and unmaintained hideaway…. nestled along side the pristine coastline of Hervey Bay, the gateway to K’gari! We as repeat guests would love to see some life brought back into the atmosphere of this hostel (it was Saturday evening 11:00pm, the communal area was shut, not a soul in sight). But more importantly we would love to see a little TLC shown toward the rooms and communal areas which would otherwise make Flashpackers an upscale, upmarket hostel based in an absolute tourist mecca. The option to use the air conditioning at free will when NO alternate cooling option was made accessible should be a standard, as it is in any accommodation. The time restrictions imposed in this hostel only allowing guests to operate air-conditioning between 5:00pm-6:00am, when no fan was made available is unreasonable in an Australian summer and particularly when there are many energy efficient and cost effective ways to manage electricity consumption in this kind of business. We would love to return but aircon is a must! Thankyou

Don’t bother wasting your money here

    rating22 Sept 2023

Had originally booked 1 night here which was fine. We phoned a week and a half before our stay to book the K’gari/Fraser Island tour through the hostel, a two day/one night trip. We also requested to book a room for the night we return from the trip as we would get back around 6pm, which we were told was fine and booked in. We were originally quoted a discounted price as we were booking the trip through the hostel, but when we had to pay the full amount on the day, we were disappointed to learn that the discount wasn’t applied. On returning from the trip and trying to check in to the hostel, we learned that the staff had actually booked the room for the night before, when we were still on K’gari, and that there wasn’t another room available at the hostel. As it was late in the evening, there was 0 vacancies in any hostel/hotel in all of Harvey Bay. The only solace we were given was an offer to sleep on the sofas in the cinema room. However, as it was a public area, we couldn’t access it until after 10pm and we’re woken up by other backpackers at 06.30 who decided to play pool whilst we were trying to sleep. I understand that the hostel is ran by people with minimal experience who are trying to back pack at the same time, but the whole experience with the staff felt very amateur, as two of them sat behind the desk laughing at us whilst we were very visibly upset and tired. Disappointed with the customer service, I wouldn’t bother staying here if you can avoid it. Flashpackers Hervey Bay, Other at Flashpackers Hervey Bay, responded to this review Dear Eilidh, Thank you for your earnest feedback. Our deepest apologies for the lack of written follow-up to your phone booking: we understand that would have prevented most of this unfortunate incident, which we sincerely regret. The staff on duty at the time of your arrival did their absolute best to find a suitable alternative – to which we would have been delighted to drive you - before resorting to the cinema room, which had been cleaned up and fitted with clean linens to maximise your comfort given the circumstances. As far as the access to the room was concerned, our receptionist volunteered to stay up afterhours to let you in at your desired time towards 11pm, rather than within 10pm per regular hours. You were free to access the room earlier as it was ready by 8pm. Furthermore, nobody would have been able to access the pool table at 6:30am, as it would have been physically accessible no earlier than 7am. We understand that seeing off-duty staff members share a small moment of hilarity may have upset you, however you can rest assured no humour whatsoever was directed toward you or your situation. On the contrary, they carefully prepared the room for you once it was clear no alternatives were available. We understand your frustration and your poor experience with our staff: even though several guests have been happy with our team, responsibility must be taken where due. Thank you once again for sharing your experience. Safe travels from all of us! :)Flashpackers Team

    Fantastic stay

    rating28 Dec 2022

Staff are beyond helpful here, from the free breakfast put out in the morning to the shuttle to the local shops. our car broke down and they were happy to hold on to the keys and liaise with the mechanic assigned to picked it up while we headed off on an overnight trip to fraser island. Our private room was comfortable and quiet. Kitchen facilities were spotless. Thank you for providing affordable, good value accommodation.

Good but too far away from everything

    rating26 Dec 2022

I arrived in hervey bay on th 1am on christmas day on the greyhound bus.  First thing to note about this hostel is that it's about a 40 minute walk from the greyhound stop! Taxis are non existent at this time of the morning so i had no choice but to walk - but halfway through, a police car picked me up and took me to the hostel 🤣.  I arrived and fiuns my key from the instructions given to me. I had booked a room in a female dorm and when I got to my room, I was in a mixed dorm and was the only female.  At 2am, there wasn't much I could do about that unfortunately which was really disappointing.  The rooms are tiny, but the bathroom is separate and allocated to that room only which is a positive.  As it was Christmas day, the hostel put on a lovely Christmas dinner which was a real nice touch.  The communal areas are nice a big.  The WiFi on arrival was great, but on the last day, it didn't work all day, not ideal for a traveller trying to find directions to the next place.  However, they do have a shuttle bus and are happy to take you to places if they are available (at socialsble hours, not 1am bus pickups) Overall, it's a fine hostel but the location is a real negative and it would have been nice to have the female dorm I booked.

    Good hostel and communal areas

    rating25 Nov 2022

The free shuttle to and from the Greyhound bus stop was very useful. The communal areas are huge and very clean! The room was clean but seemed a little tired. The reception staff seemed friendly, however there was a bit of an atmosphere when we were leaving as some of the staff were shouting at eachother... a little unprofessional. They say you can hire bikes but they were broken with flat tyres when we asked. Otherwise, it was fine for a 1 night stay.
