Freezing in Queensland in May and given a space heater as a solution

    rating09 May 2026

While the staff here were professional, friendly, and did their absolute best, the structural issues with this property require urgent management attention. I made the mistake of relying on the brand’s global reputation without checking recent reviews, which I now see some of which echo my frustrations. The main issue was the climate control. I never thought I’d be freezing in Queensland, but my room was freezing cold on the first night. Despite cranking the thermostat, nothing changed. I notified the front desk the next morning, and while they sent maintenance who claimed it was "fixed," the second night was just as cold.As someone who usually finds Sydney winters mild, this was surprisingly unbearable. After demanding a solution, I was provided with a blanket and a manual space heater. Using a space heater on a carpeted hotel floor is a massive safety concern. Between the fire risk and a timer that required resetting every 20–30 minutes, I got almost no sleep during my three-night stay.I’ve stayed in everything from 5-star luxury to $100-a-night motels across many cities in Australia; even the cheapest motels had functional ACs. Had this been December rather than May, the lack of cooling would have been a health hazard. Management needs to address these basic infrastructure failings immediately. If Management is interested, I have videos of the thermostat showing the set temperature versus the room’s actual temperature as evidence. Anyway, never again at this hotel.

Has the potential to be amazing. Great location & lovely staff - but needs some major renovations in the bathrooms.

    rating23 Apr 2026

Friendly hotel, lovely staff, great location. Tram outside & bus stop very close. Beach a short walk. Nice room but in desperate need of repair. Rusty bolt on the balcony door, could hardly open it. Shower screen was terribly mouldy. Beautiful pool but not enough sunbeds, yet space for more. Sunbeds uncomfortable. The fight for a sunbed ruined experience. Pool needs accessible toilets, as you had to dry off to walk through the lobby which was cold. The other toilets were down concrete steps to gym which was cold, desolate & unnerving. Palm trees need maintenance as branches falling. Good food service around pool. Unfortunately, kids & adults would slap pool noodles against the water, leading to loud, firework type noise that resonated throughout whole area. Loud & painful on ears. People were playing ball games, across the pool, which is horrible for those trying to swim/relax. They need signs stating no ball games/slapping pool noodles onto the pool surface. There were small children, as young as about 6, jumping around in the spa, unsupervised. The hotel was very cold inside which was particularly unpleasant in the restaurant at night. We only ate there once because of this but the restaurant food was lovely. We paid for 3 people to stay, and they only included breakfast for 2 which was strange. Would love to go back as the hotel a lovely feel, & staff were wonderful, but would want relaxing pool time, more sunbeds & no mould IHG Service, Owner at Crowne Plaza Surfers Paradise By IHG, responded to this review Hi jbta2026,Thank you for staying at Crowne Plaza Surfers Paradise and sharing your experience.
