Review of stay at City Centre Budget Hotel Melbourne

    rating16 Mar 2026

I stayed in City Centre Budget Hotel Melbourne for a week in March 2026. It was an okay place to stay. Some things that I noticed whilst there: twice the toilet paper in the shared bathrooms ran out; ; the taps in the shared bathrooms were hard to turn off; the WiFi would often drop, or run very slowly; the paint on the ceiling was peeling; the floor in my room was uneven.

Good stay and value for money- location was great only a short walk from many places. The staff were very friendly - no air con so can get hot in the rooms but was provided at fan in the room - shared bathrooms were clean and has handy having a fridge in the room. Good stay.

Recommended if you don't mind a lot of stairs

    rating27 Feb 2023

I had a nice stay at this hotel over the Australian Open weekend at the end of January, using after-hours check-in.Circumstances: two women staying in a twin roomConsThis place is not accessible for anyone with mobility needs. If you aren't happy to climb multiple flights of stairs, this is not the hotel for you. There is no air conditioning or screens on your windows. You can use a fan or risk being woken at a ridiculous hour of the morning if you open the soundproofed windows. The stall showers have minimal light, natural or otherwise. There are four self-contained bathrooms with toilets, two per level, that are well-lit and I recommend you consider using instead. The website says they have a carpark. They do not. However, there's decent weekend parking rates literally next door in public parking if you drive in after 5pm on a Friday (perhaps not so recommended if you plan to drive in on a weekday).ProsThe communal bathrooms were cleaned at least four times over the 36 hour period I was there. There were no signs of mold or significant disrepair in the building (parts were old but nothing was falling apart). The room itself was also quite clean. The staff were friendly and accommodating for reasonable requests (eg. an additional key when a friend joined my twin room after booking). My check-in was well-managed and easy to deal with, despite it being after hours. You have a little fridge and drying racks in your room and at the very top of the building there is a laundry, kitchen and clothes line with a little eating area. The stairs to reach this point (which are the emergency exit stairs, by the way), look infrequently used but are stable. It's quite a hike, though. My room faced the outside of the building but some rooms appear to face the inner courtyard. For the sake of having fresh air (there's not much wind on the inside of the very tall courtyard walls), I recommend asking for one of the external wall rooms. The room also comes with a block-out blind. We were visiting for evening events and it felt safe to travel down that part of Little Collins Street late at night.Final commentsI recommend the hotel and would go back there for short stays.

everything as advertised (except for the loud garbage trucks at sparrow's fart); clean and tidy; rooftop kitchen and laundry; in walking distance to most parts of the city or free trams; excellent communication prior to stay
