  Excellent position but room without sunlight

  Good hostel with excellent central position near Southern Cross Station. Reception 24/7, shared bathrooms. The room unfortunately was not too big and had a window but with absolutely no sunlight coming in, too dark there was not much air exchange. Air felt very dusty.   Good locationBasic check inZero serviceGoods got stolen and staff couldn't care less nor respond in a timely manner. Unhelpful management to check who took my stuff. I travel lots, hotels & hostels globally and never had such thing happen. No one takes responsibility, they blame it on the guests cause that's the easy way out. Fat out. I suggest they google the word hospitable.

  Second stay at this place and should have known better. As a solo traveller one tends to accept being put where there is a space despite booking Six months in advance however my room was filled with piles of unwashed smelly clothing . A bed was co shared with workers and never empty , One sleeping in the day, one at night. Neither washer. The smell was such that when I opened the door to allow some fresh air in, the people walking by were holding their noses it was so bad. Another delighted in coughing up mucus in the bin. The room was in my view never cleaned. Avoid at all costs.   It is good but have room of improvement

  Need to Improve:My Room, the bed creaked. The light doesn't work, and many sockets in my room doesn't work.Good:1. Kitchen is clean and tidy.2. Staff knows our needs, they help me a lot.3. Melbourne was cold when I arrived, but room is warm enough.4. Location is convenience to many places.5. Toilet is clean.Actually I think it is good for a hostel and hope the improvement will be considered.   YHA MelbournePros1. Well located near food and groceries2. Good kitchen, well equipped with pans, cutlery and fridges.3. Common Area (level 0) has good vibes, most people seem to hang out here4. Staff are helpful5. Water pressure in the showers is goodCons1. Room assigned to us was very small (compared to other YHAs)2. Can hear train sounds from the room throughout the night3. Beds are squeaky so if you or your roommates are tossing/turning on it, they make a lot of noise4. The laundry facilities could use improvement. The power resets at 10pm, which means if a cycle is running, it will pause until someone manually restarts it. Even when uninterrupted, our clothes didn’t dry fully. I was also a bit confused when a staff member reassured me I was “not in trouble” — I hadn’t done anything wrong, just reported an issue with the machine. I was also confused when this staff member said that they “don’t allow” people to do laundry after 10pm when we weren’t made aware of any such rule during check in, and no such rule actually existed… 5. we were given a clothes stand that was put in front of the heater. we didn’t think much of it. but on day3 of us living there an alarm went off in our room and we were told it was because the metal clothes stand got too hot…6. sometimes there isn’t any hot water in the showers at night. hot water is a little bit inconsistentFor the cons, yes you can say that it’s just a youth hostel thing, but for the same company Youth Hostel Australia, YHA Sydney harbour and YHA Melbourne have wildly different standards. The Sydney harbour one was a dream to be at. We are glad you enjoyed our central location and made use of the local amenities as well as our communal kitchen.All of our properties across Australia differ in size and shape, this makes it hard to maintain consistency in terms of the product we offer but also allows us to create unique experience for our guests. While we wish our rooms were as big as YHA Sydney Harbour this is unfortunately not possible due to the layout of our building. The layout of the room will also change depending on where you are in our building. Although we try to keep consistency in terms of where clothes hangers are located, this can sometimes change as guests can often move these to make better use of the room. Our central location also means we have city noises such as trams and trains into the nighttime hours. We offer free earplugs at Reception to all guests.Our laundry facilities are available to all guests between 8AM and 10PM daily. This is shown on the door to the laundry room as well as on our website and in the property information sent to you before your stay. The machines turn off at 10PM to save power overnight and we encourage all guests to complete their washing or drying before this time.Hot water is available throughout the property 24/7.
