Good clean hotel. Basic but good value. Staff friendly on check in. Secure parking in building $20 overnight. Not far to walk to strip if restaurants in Honeysuckle.

    Very comfortable

This is very much a standard Holiday Inn. The furnishings are basic but adequate and the room is reasonably large. Housekeeping is up to needs. In other respects age is appearing. I may have been unlucky but I encountered several problems. The sensors on the air conditioning were not working properly; and the TV remote appeared to be on the verge of complete failure. My room faced Stewart Ave. The building opposite is the Newcastle City Council offices where there was a building panel above the entrance foyer where a street to roof LED lights burned 24 hours a day floodlighting that side of the hotel.Breakfast provided was basic but adequate in variety and quantity.

Holiday Inn Newcastle – January 2026 - Never Again!

    rating27 Jan 2026

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Newcastle from 16–19 January 2026 and unfortunately would not recommend this hotel.Room & Service IssuesWe arrived late on the first night and immediately found the mattress extremely firm, leaving us stiff and sore the next morning. We raised this politely at reception and asked if a mattress topper could be arranged. We were told someone would attend to it.When we returned later that afternoon, nothing had been done. Returning to the front desk, the response from the staff member was dismissive — minimal engagement and a flat “yeah” — giving the clear impression that our concerns were not important. We also advised that milk had not been replenished in the fridge. The reaction to this simple request was surprisingly unhelpful. When we asked if milk could be placed in our room while we were out to dinner, the answer was a blunt “No”. A young male staff member later intervened and suggested we collect it on return. While we were out, the Duty Manager, Rochelle, called to discuss the mattress issue. To her credit, she apologised, made an effort to resolve the problem, and arranged for a doona to be placed under the sheets to soften the bed. This was done by the time we returned. She also offered a goodwill gesture of reimbursing our hotel parking ($60 for three days) — however, as of today, that credit has not been received.Breakfast BuffetThe breakfast buffet was very poor and well below what I would expect from a Holiday Inn:Very few wait staff visibleTables not cleared, even though it wasn’t busyOther guests openly complaining about cleanlinessFood quality was mediocre at best — powdered eggs, lukewarm bacon and sausagesFruit selection was limited to watermelon, unpeeled sliced oranges, unripe pears, or canned mixed fruitOverall, it felt cheap and neglected, not hotel-quality dining.Ambience & First ImpressionsThe hotel itself felt dark and poorly lit. On arrival, we genuinely thought we had walked into a café rather than a hotel reception and had to ask staff if this was actually the Holiday Inn. First impressions matter — and this was not a good one.Location & SurroundingsThe immediate area felt unsafe and chaotic. Walking to the nearby mall was uncomfortable. During our stay we witnessed:Almost being hit on the footpath by someone pushing a trolleySomeone spitting on the floor inside McDonald’sA shoplifter being apprehended outside Woolworths with a full trolley of stolen groceriesAs a former US police officer, I’m very aware of my surroundings — and this area raised genuine concerns.PositivesNot all staff were poor. Nieve / Niamh was genuinely pleasant and took the time to engage in conversation, which stood out against the otherwise dismissive service.Final ThoughtsThis hotel does not meet the standard expected of an IHG / Holiday Inn property.Unattentive and dismissive servicePoor breakfast offeringDark, unwelcoming ambienceQuestionable locationUnfulfilled goodwill promise (parking reimbursement)We would not stay here again IHG Service, Owner at Holiday Inn Express Newcastle By Ihg, responded to this review Hi Paul A,Thank you for choosing to stay at our Holiday Inn Express Newcastle during your trip.
