Why travel 900km when you could see dolphins 200km from Perth?

    rating18 May 2026

Why travel to Monkey Mia when you can see dolphins in Bunbury without being attacked by flies? I travelled up North from Perth and did not enjoy it at all. The red dirt and bushes for hundred of kilometres is not appealing. Perhaps travellers from Europe may enjoy the emptiness and open roads. Not only, there is little to see, but you have to deal with the wind and the insects (ex. Flies, dragonflies and butterflies). Butterflies are not so cute when they crash into your face. Monkey Mia itself was really disappointing. 1. The beach is below average compared to Perth or Denmark or Albany or Esperance. 2. The RAC resort… unsure why it is called a Resort. It is more a basic caravan park with a swimming pool. The service at the coffee shop/restaurant (only place there) was poor. To have a coffee, minimum 30 minute waiting time in low season (?). 3. The dolphins are cute but why travel 900km when you can see dolphins in Bunbury 200km from Perth? In brief, unless you love fishing, possibly have a boat, or enjoy snorkeling and diving, I will not recommend Monkey Mia or Shark Bay.

    Fabulous

We stayed at the resort for three nights in a camper van on a powered site. The location is idyllic on a beautiful bay with soft sand. The resort caters to backpackers, tents, caravans, RVs and those seeking a more hotel-like experience in villas and studios.Check in was efficient and the escort was immaculate which was amazing given the passing of Cyclone Narelle just a few days before. The facilities for campers were excellent with plenty of ablutions and shower blocks, the camp kitchens were enormous and the two eateries provided a huge variety of food - breakfast, lunches, dinner and snacks with a wide array of drinks from the bars. Food and drinks were reasonably priced given the location. The dolphin experiences were well managed by staff. There are bbq pits available, boat ramps, a shop selling groceries and gifts and swimming pools. There are emus wandering about and dolphins frequent the shallows on the beaches along with pelicans and turtles. The resort had everything we wanted and we wished we could have stayed longer. We loved it.

Great, except for the breakfast rush

    rating20 Mar 2026

As is often the case, I found all the staff here wonderful and extremely helpful, with no exception. We did enjoy our time here, watching the dolphins and other sea life off the beach, and the room was quite satisfactory, and we were lucky enough to have an upstairs beach view room. I did have one first world problem which was a bit disappointing, and when I shared this with the resort, they did respond and act quickly. I do have one issue that I feel could be dealt either much better, but not sure how this situation changes when they are in peak season. I don’t for the life of me understand why they open the restaurant in the morning at 7 when the experience with the dolphins start at 7:45. This means you either get there at 7 and shovel your food down, which we did once, or come up after the first round of dolphin stuff and have to join a mega queue and fight for a table. So many places I’ve stayed in that have an internal breakfast facility, start their breakfasts at 6:30, which in this case would dramatically alter this problem, as would the supply of a buffet option, which they seem to be set up for but not using. The restaurant itself was good, we had dinner there on only one of the three nights, Still, it was a great few days for sure.

    Overpriced and overhyped

    rating03 Mar 2026

overpriced caravan park. Advertised as a resort but it’s just a overhyped caravan park. Best to stay at Denham. Pay the $15 pp fee at the gate to see the dolphins (may or may not see though)

    Overhyped and unwelcoming

    rating03 Mar 2026

We recently stayed here and left feeling disappointed. The level of customer service and communication from management did not reflect the premium pricing and RAC reputation. Staff came across as unhelpful and at times avoidant. At a resort of this size, you would normally expect staff to acknowledge guests in passing & create a welcoming atmosphere, but we did not experience that at all.The experience felt overhyped by social media and in reality, came across as more of a standard caravan park than the resort style destination it’s portrayed to be.After reading several reviews from the past couple of months, it seems other guests have had similar experiences. It’s disappointing to see consistent feedback without noticeable improvement.
