  Disgusting, dirty, freezing and generally awful

  My partner recently made a booking to stay in the Shiralee backpacker hostel in Perth Australia we clicked the non refundable option by mistake and tried for a refund but no luck which is okay. Upon arriving here the room is in absolute disgraceful condition chewing gum stuck all over the walls which you can see in the pictures I have attached dust and dirt all over the ceiling fan the room is freezing. As for the toilets they are a disgrace. This room cost 1600 euros as far as I’m aware and it’s not worth more than 100 a night IF EVEN. Appalling conditions and very uncomfortable and will not hesitate to let people know and share the experience we are having here with no other option as neither you nor the hostel would refund us. Just letting you know it’s the worst experience I’ve had in a long time! Below is just a handful of snippets I took I have worse ones! DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!

  MY BEST EXPERIENCE IN AUSTRALIA

  I booked this hostel for 3 nights and I stayed for 3 months. It's definitely the THE BEST HOSTEL IN PERTH ! the staff is amazing, so nice, so caring, so friendly, and so helpful! Charlie, the owner, even helps travelers to find jobs and is always making arrangements to satisfy everyone. This place is like home. The bathrooms, Kitchen, and Common area are always clean! It's 100% what I expected to find in a hostel and the people I met there are now real friends. I miss this place already and I can't wait to come back after doing my 88 days. I would recommend it 10 000x if you want a real hostel life experience!thanks the shiralee team, you made y stay in Perth way better!

  Staff running the place DOWN !!!

  I had a short stay here I was older then everyone else but it states that and it was ok for the time being why Covid-19 is happening, rooms were ok but staff never cleaned them I had to empty the bins a couple of times myself for the full 8 bed dorm as staff were never seen around. When staff were finally on reception they were never helpful and always sat on FaceTime or Facebook. I used to get up quite early and the kitchen would be a mess you would think the night shift staff would clean it up before going to bed. I needed help one morning and went out around 7 45am to see the staff as reception opens at 7 30 and the first staff member didnt come out their room until 8 15 to open the shutters. The owner is really good and helpful and nice to talk to but I feel the staff there take advantage of him because he doesn’t live there, and have over heard them calling him names. I’ve also heard staff verbally attacking guests that stay there which is unprofessional as if they want to drive people who are not part of their 'group' out of the hostel.   Watch out for the owner

  Most of the reviews you can find about this hostel are rather positive. To be honest, even though we had a cockroach under our bed the hostel is quite clean - comparing to most hostels however -, toast for breakfast is served and the location might seem to some as cosy. It is a 1 story detached house in a nice neighborhood. There are enough bathrooms but overall the house is way to small for all the people. There was no way the corona restrictions could have ever been stuck to. You always touch the other person when walking passed someone in the hallway. Moreover, the public rooms outside close from 10pm so everyone has to be cramped inside or leave. Moreover, the public spaces are in front of people’s rooms so it is hard to relax at daytime when you can constantly hear people.The worst part about this hostel, though, is the owner Charlie Reeves. Frankly, it must be hard to manage a hostel with youngsters from all over the world. But if you are mentally overwhelmed by it, you should do a different job. Do not ever dare to complain if you are there. No matter if the bathrooms are dirty or you would like to change rooms. He immediately loses it and gets very personal e.g. “I knew from the beginning when I saw you guys you would cause trouble”. Then he said he called other hostels to find out about us. How ridiculous and paranoid is this?As we are from Germany he emphasized a thousand times how much he hates Germany since it is, according to him, the “most f***ed up rip off country in the world”. We didn’t feel offended by that but you can see on which level he leads a conversation.Be prepared to be exposed in a wall of shame if you act against Charlie’s rules. If you do not clean the dishes - oh man I really hate if people do not clean after themselves but this goes too far - he might print the picture if you he has from the hostels CCTV no matter if you are halfway naked or not. Please see the pictures attached. This is simply inhumane.The other day he bragged about hitting a guest with a guitar on the head because he had an argument with him. I don’t know the circumstances but this is nothing you should tell the world. In this Hostel you will not feel comfortable. Charlie Reeves is a psychopath and with him you never know. This guy was such hard work we had to clean up after him all day and all night. Drunk and high on drugs most of the time,he wanted us to run around after him 24/7 for $17 per night.We have to deal with people like this every few months and this guy was HARD WORK. Most of the review is a lie and even TRIP ADVISOR is a lie as well as they let anyone leave reviews even when they have not stayed. They dont want to help you out with the lies that people put on. I want to leave a review for trip advisor but no they wont let you. $$$$$$ If you dont have a booking at the hostels anyone can leave a review for anything.Worst ever travel site

  Great hostel with friendly staff and good facilities

  The staff/owner are really friendly and approachable and the facilities (kitchen and bathrooms) are very clean and full of good cooking equipment. Free towel hire is here and the hostel is very social. Based a short walk from Perth City Centre and in the same area as Northbridge night life which is very lively on Saturdays. Would recommend staying here!
