    Forced to cancel due to a scheduling error made by a tour operator promoted on their own website. The owner refused any refund or credit despite the circumstances being entirely outside our control. Poor form.

    We had the most wonderful stay at Hillcrest Merimbula — it’s the kind of place you almost want to keep a secret.The recently renovated retro style is absolutely stunning, blending nostalgic charm with modern comfort in such a thoughtful way. Every detail feels considered, and the atmosphere is relaxed yet special.The views are simply breathtaking — waking up to that outlook each morning was a highlight in itself.What truly sets Hillcrest apart, though, is the hospitality. Caspar, the owner, could not have been more welcoming. From the moment we arrived, he went out of his way to make sure we felt at home, offering genuine warmth and helpful recommendations that made our stay even more enjoyable.And the breakfast? Absolutely delicious. Fresh, generous, and the perfect way to start the day while soaking in those incredible views.If you’re heading to Merimbula, do yourself a favour and stay here — we can’t wait to come back.

    No air con for 2 out 3 days - Owner denied responsibility

    We booked two rooms at this hotel for the period of 29/12/25 to 01/01/26. Each room totalling to around $580 per night. Upon arrival we noticed air con in room 20 did not operate so we contacted reception immediately as it is middle of summer and the rooms are small and ventilation is limited. After the initial contact but response we called reception again at around 5pm to ensure our query is being action. I was told by the owner he will give me a call back but didn't. So first day/night without air con and it was uncomfortable. Next morning went to see reception and was told their maintenance guy will have a look. We could not use the room as it was hot so we all squeezed into our second room. Our daughter was told later by maintenance guy a new remote had to be ordered. This is very frustrating and so I went to see reception at 3pm asking for a follow up and she was confused why it wasn't working. Reception came to check again and all of a sudden a new remote appeared out of the store room and problem was fixed. After our stay, sent email to the owner requesting a review because we paid full price for their rooms but their air con was not checked prior to check in and left us without air con in one room for 2 out of 3 days. Owner denied responsibility and does not take any accountability for their part. If you can't provide a product to your description, you cannot charge full price nor should you provide this product. This issue could have been easier fixed but the owner stands firm with their decision. You are free to make whatever decision you want, but you are not free from the consequences of your choice.

    Misses the mark

    Perfectly positioned atop a hill overlooking the bay, Hillcrest has the potential to be something special. The location is excellent, the welcome was friendly, and the facilities including a pool, tennis court, and fire pit suggest it could be a real hidden gem.Unfortunately, several things missed the mark. The “renovated” rooms don’t quite live up to that description. A fresh coat of paint, new bed linen, and updated fixtures don’t amount to a true renovation. The showers showed signs of mould, and the drawers and doors appeared to be original from the 1970s and smelled like it too.It’s a real shame, as Hillcrest clearly has so much potential, but the renovations feel superficial and cost-cutting. We will definitely return to Merimbula, as it’s a stunning part of the South Coast, but unless Hillcrest undergoes a more thorough revamp, we wouldn’t stay here again.

    Great price for a clean comfortable room. The view is insane! I always book here when I’m in the area for work. Get a room with a private balcony on the top floor.
