    Lovely town, extremely disappointing accommodation

    rating28 Jan 2026

It makes sense to me now that I’ve seen this place is on the market. The challenge the new buyer will face will be to improve the reputation of the place.I was travelling in Tassie in January with my dog and so organised my accommodation in October. I stayed in various dog friendly hotels around Tasmania and had fantastic experiences and paid around the same amount at each place.I rang a few days in advance to make sure they were aware of the dog coming to be asked if I knew that I’d be staying ‘in the wagon’.. having booked on booking.com I was not aware and believed I’d booked a basic, pet friendly hotel room.Their website indicates that ‘the Gypsy Wagon’ is ‘glamping style’ and to be honest with you if I had have intended to glamp… I would’ve been satisfied, but thinking I had booked a hotel room and paid the same price for the two lovely places I stayed at earlier, I was extremely disappointed. While the bed was comfortable the toilet stank, ants came in and while the old towels were changed daily, nothing else in the room was swept or cleaned. When I arrived I was asked if I wanted milk for tea or coffee and I said yes. Subsequently milk was poured into a little jug from the one in their fridge. I asked what the local pub was like and the owner dismissed it with the wave of a hand as if it were no good (it was fantastic - friendly staff and great food). She suggested instead their restaurant which as well as having a very short dining window, she offered to bring my dog in with me as ‘we don’t care what the council think’.When I expressed my disappointment in the room and the comparative amount I’d paid for the other places, the owner suggested I try to cancel knowing I’d have nowhere else to stay. He also suggested that I shouldn’t have used booking.com and that the price they charged to stay in the room was cheap ($144 per night - it’s honestly worth about $70 at best - think a similar quality to an Indonesian backpackers). The location is excellent - great proximity to historical town Richmond which I absolutely loved. If you can though, don’t stay here; if you must, plan your days to spend as little time here as possible, eat elsewhere and perhaps wedge a chair under the door handle.

Great hospitality and a beautiful location

We had a lovely stay at Hatcher's Manor, nestled within Richmond's vineyards and only a 5-minute drive from town. The room is spacious, comfortable and quiet. Jeanette is a lovely hostess.

Love love loved our stay. The owners are salt of the earth people. A stay that will remain as a favourite. The environment, the animals, the homeliness. Absolutely perfect. If we visit Tasmania again, this beautiful place will be first on the list. COLIN, JAN AND BRETT GREAT HOSTS!

Not a place we would visit again

    rating28 Sept 2025

Upon arrival the scenery was amazing and the location was terrific, close to the main part of Richmond. However, the apartment we stayed in (Woodburn), was extremely dated and not a place that felt inviting to stay or relax in. It has not been maintained, updated, or cleaned particularly well (crumbs over the coffee table, stained carpet, cracked tiles in bathroom, damaged walls that weren't fixed properly etc) and we did not want to stay longer than the one night planned.

    HATCHERS MANOR, Tasmania 😖

    rating01 Sept 2025

I have reviewed on Google, however, owners seem to have blocked in order to only show favourable reviews. We visited for a "0" birthday dinner. Some people stayed, so I'll leave accommodation reviews to them if they should choose. We arrived on a Saturday evening at 6pm having been invited to have a couple of early family drinks before other guests arrived. I wasn't drinking as I was driver for the evening. Bar was unattended & glancing at fridge behind the bar there were no alcoholic beverages in it, just water bottles & a bottle of an indescribable soft drink. After 30 mins. an elderly, I'm not being rude I'm 70, came into dining/bar area. To say he knew nothing about serving drinks is an understatement. 2 bottles of champagne were available but had to be obtained from kitchen. We had 20+ guests attending in the long run. I had a 7ounce soda water, $3.50. Everyone that asked about an alcoholic drink had to go to kitchen to try & select & pretty much all white wines were warm. No beer on offer at all, warm or otherwise. Other guests arrived wanting drinks & again taken to kitchen. Apparently 3 dogs roaming around in kitchen, 1 with 3 legs, a bit scary with food to come 🤦‍♂️So now to menu. 2 courses, Entree Mushroom capes backed with cheese (No I haven't got spelling wrong) or Chicken veg. Soup. Main, basically Apricot Chicken or Lamb Roast. Without going into detail, Entrees 2 out of 10, Mains 4 out of 10.Our waiter stuffed up our original order so we had to re order. Other waiter, the elderly barman, wandered around with no idea whilst chewing, open mouthed on something. Thank God my Neice provided a birthday cake for dessert. At 8.30pm staff member came out & began clearing glasses, some still half full of warm Beveridge, clearly indicating that service, such as it was, was over!!I apologise for this lengthy, & there is a lot more out of this. Suffice to say, I will NEVER go back & I suggest nobody else goes there EVER!!I notice some good reviews on Google. All I can say is that some people are easily pleased & leave it at that. Cheers, Pete
