Best place to start your holiday!!

    rating08 Sept 2025

What an amazingly beautiful place to start our holiday in QLD. My partner is into bird watching and I’m very much into reading and relaxing. We were both really pleased with our respective activities. The hosts were both so friendly and welcoming and made us feel like we were staying with friends instead of a hotel. I recommend highly visiting this place and being prepared to relax. It was also a pleasure each day to be lucky enough to see “Chika” the local Cassowary.I’ll be back for sure! John Keiser, Owner at Licuala Lodge, responded to this review Hello V&D, thanks for enjoying the place, as that is what makes it worthy. What starts well ends well, and you have a whole trip ahead, keep enjoying all the great places you are about to know! Kind regards J&G&A

    Outstanding

    rating15 Aug 2025

This b and b is stunning: the grounds have such a range of tropical plants visited by sunbird, friar bird, drongos and of course cassowaries. While we stayed, we saw a male cassowary walking around the house twice and then saw him and a female in the bush behind the house. Stunning. The rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated and have an outside seating area to look out on the garden. There's also a lovely pool.Guillem and Jeremy were warm, caring and incredible hosts, always making time to ask how we were and gave loads of tips. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic: homemade bread, yoghurt with coconut and passion fruit and honey and even boiled eggs. You also get to eat bfast overlooking the garden, watching the sunbird in the Persian silk flowers. Couldn't recommend enough. John Keiser, Owner at Licuala Lodge, responded to this review Hello J&K, and thank you very much. It's always a pleasure when our guests are so excited about Nature! We hope that the trip back home was pleasant and that the last stop on the way had lots to offer too. Kind regards J&G

    Mission Beach hidden gem!!

    rating19 Mar 2025

What a gem of a place!! Should have stayed more than one night. The hosts Guillem and John couldn't be nicer nor do more to make their guests feel utterly special. Rooms are charming, they've thought of everything, and the rest of the facilities are lovely (gorgeous gardens and pool, and yes we saw a cassowary... twice!). Breakfast is delicious, local and plentiful. Very highly recommended! John Keiser, Owner at Licuala Lodge, responded to this review Hello S&D :) Many thanks again, happy to know that you enjoyed it!

    Wow -birding heaven!

    rating21 Nov 2024

I booked this place due to the excellent reviews, and the high number of reviews from people seeing Cassowaries, and it certainly did not disappoint! The hosts had only been at the place since earlier in the year, but you wouldn't know. They were friendly, helpful and great hosts. You have breakfast on the verandah of the main house and it was gorgeous, served with homemade breads, jams etc, delish. The rooms themselves are comfortable, but fairly basic, whilst still having what you needed, including a fridge and they were lovely and clean. The gardens are absolutely stunning and attract a variety of birds, the main ones being the Cassowary. We were lucky enough to see them on the two mornings we were there. The first morning a male and chick, the second morning started with a male and chick, then two more, probably males appeared and finally a huge female who chased them all bellowing as she went! After a while the male and the chick walked back through the gardens and then our host called us to say they were behind our rooms and there were the two other males! What an amazing morning! We recommend you having a drive around the houses nearby, we were lucky enough to see lots of kangaroos and also a kingfisher sat on someone's fence.Even without our fantastic sightings we would have enjoyed our stay and can only highly recommend! John Keiser, Owner at Licuala Lodge, responded to this review Hello M&G, we do remember those encounters! This is what followed: Doris, Garrett's chick, started coming all by herself one week after your departure. Dad kept showing up for a bit too, but separately, and another week afterwards he stopped showing up at all. Doris kept coming for another month until she probably found a territory of her own and Garrett is still seen around the neighbourhood, but no longer pushing the boundaries so much. As for Charly, the local male, he vanished completely just two days after you left. Only Chica, the local female, kept coming. That lasted for 50 days while we kept crossing fingers for Charly to be sitting on some eggs. After some worry he showed up again the 58th day, but without any chicks, so we have no idea what kept him away. Funnily enough, now it's Chica who comes by less often, but we still see them regularly.Anyway, we thought you'd like to know what was going on with the cassowaries :) Thank you very much for the review and the kind words and we hope that the rest of the journey was very pleasant and full of exciting things.Kind regards, J&G.
