Impeccable stay, but embarrassing handling of the deposit

    rating19 May 2026

I stayed at the Steigenberger Herrenhof in Vienna for five days and I have to say that, in terms of the hotel experience itself, the stay was truly impeccable. The location is excellent, very convenient for getting around the city. The room met my expectations and the breakfast, it has to be said, is amazing. Rich, well presented and high quality. So far, everything was very good. Then came the “deposit” chapter, and that is where the soap opera began.Upon arrival, even though the room had already been paid for by my organization, I was the only person in the group who was asked to pay a 200 euro deposit. Strange, of course, but fine. These things happen. Let’s not turn it into an international incident. The problem started at check-out. I asked for the deposit to be released and was told that, once everything had been checked, the amount would be returned to my account. One day passed: nothing. Two days passed: nothing. I wrote an email asking for clarification, in a polite and calm tone: no reply. I wrote again: still nothing. At that point, more than a financial matter, it became a matter of principle.I called reception and was told that only after my phone call had they seen my emails, and that they would reply as soon as possible. That was at 10 in the morning. It is now 10 in the evening and, surprise surprise, still nothing.I wrote again with a laconic “I am still waiting”. Once again, silence. For a hotel of this level, I find this handling of the situation quite embarrassing. Not so much because of the deposit itself, but because of the complete lack of communication after check-out.The stay was excellent, yes. The breakfast was fantastic, yes. The location was perfect, yes.But the ending really leaves a bitter taste. How much longer does this soap opera need to continue? Just asking. Elisabeth Perwanger, Geschäftsführer at Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof, responded to this review Dear Sir,We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your room and also liked our breakfast buffet. We sincerely regret that, upon arrival, you were the only member of your group who was required to provide a deposit. We completely understand your confusion and will investigate internally why this occurred.I also understand your concern that the deposit has still not been credited back to your credit card. Depending on the bank, this process can indeed take up to two weeks. We have also received your emails with thanks and are already looking into the matter. Please understand that we are currently awaiting feedback from the credit card company, and we will get back to you as quickly as possible. With kind regards,Elisabeth PerwangerGeneral Manager

A wonderful hotel in the perfect spot in Vienna

    rating17 Apr 2026

The Steigenberger Herrenhof is a wonderful hotel with the perfect location in the center of Vienna, which easy access to the Hapsburg palace, most of the great museums and the Opera. We stayed there for 13 nights in a beautiful, large and well appointed suite. We had lovely views over the rooftops. The staff of the hotel is exceptional. They were uniformly helpful, cheerful, and would go the extra mile. The breakfast was excellent with a large variety to chose from. The bar/lounge was a great place to grab lunch, dinner or a snack any time. We will return. Elisabeth Perwanger, Geschäftsführer at Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof, responded to this review Dear Mary,Thank you very much for your wonderful feedback and for taking the time to share your impressions of your stay with us.We are truly delighted to hear that you enjoyed our central location in Vienna, your suite with its views over the rooftops, as well as the comfort and amenities of the hotel. It is especially rewarding to read your kind words about our team. We are very pleased that their helpfulness and positive attitude made such a difference to your stay.We are also glad that you enjoyed our breakfast selection and the atmosphere of our bar and lounge area throughout your visit.Your intention to return is the greatest compliment we could receive, and we very much look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. With kind regards,Elisabeth PerwangerGeneral Manager

Very warm room (in April!!) without functioning air condition.

    rating16 Apr 2026

The hotel is far more "simple" in real life than in photos on Hotel websites online. The staff at the reception were kind but you could barely hear them from several bachelorette parties happening in the lobby. In our room we realised that the air condition was not working (and the room was very warm). They had no other rooms to give us (and we paid extra to get a better view and larger room). Elisabeth Perwanger, Geschäftsführer at Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof, responded to this review Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay. We are very sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. We truly regret that we could not provide you with a more comfortable stay and hope that we may have the opportunity to restore your confidence in the future. With kind regards,Elisabeth PerwangerGeneral Manager

    Cold weather warm welcome

    rating23 Jan 2026

We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights during our city break in Vienna. Must say we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it. Our room was spacious and was worth the extra for the deluxe. The location was ideal in a peaceful attractive street yet a short walk to major sites. The breakfast was good with plenty of choice and we enjoyed the lively bar and really helpful bar staff and other staff too. The only problem was that there was too much to do in 3 days so we will need to come back Elisabeth Perwanger, Geschäftsführer at Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof, responded to this review Dear Mr. David,Thank you very much for your lovely review and for choosing to stay with us during your city break in Vienna. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that the Deluxe room met your expectations. It is great to know that you appreciated our peaceful yet central location, as well as the variety offered at breakfast. We are also very pleased that you enjoyed the lively atmosphere of our bar and found our bar team and staff helpful and welcoming.Your comment about there being too much to see in just three days made us smile. We would be absolutely delighted to welcome you back for your next visit and help make your stay just as enjoyable. Until then, thank you again for your kind recommendation. With kind regards,Elisabeth PerwangerGeneral Manager

A beautiful building in an excellent location. Easy walk, many "must see" attractions. The people were friendly and efficient. Plenty of restaurants nearby, and a good one in the hotel. The bar/cafe was convenient and quite good. Were I to return to Vienna, this would be my spot.
