We love this hotel when visiting family in Belgium. Home from home with comfortable bed in a spacious room. Service is excellent in the bar and in the restaurant and at reception. Very good menu and extensive wine list. Very reasonably priced. Recommended

Don't trust your first impressions, poor experience guaranteed

Looks good on the surface until you sleep in a bed so narrow you will fall of it if you roll while you sleep. Very noisy with a bar open until late and shouty clients. Cleaning staff stole something pricey enough from my bad but not used often enough for me to notice until I had checked out (clever!). Avoid this hotel.

    Terrible reception experience

The staff at reception is terrible. Did not have a good experience. . Rude. We had a whole argument in front of other customers. They were simply disrespectful. Talking to each other laughing while was waiting 5 minutes at the reception. The room was great .

    A disappointment given previous stays

    rating08 Aug 2025

We have stayed here many times since 2007, in which time its changed names/ownership?/management? twice. This time was perhaps the worst experience we have had. The rooms were fine and we had no issues with them, apart from the view from the window was over their refuse bins. The rooms were clean and comfortable and with all you would needWith check in and out they had issues with a new system which had been introduced. I have no issue at all with the reception staff who were struggling with the system and I felt really sorry for them. I think most guests understood this inc the man who waited 1/2 an hour to get his bill sorted. Hopefully the issues will be sorted. We stayed 2 nights. In 2007 when we first stayed here their restaurant was full so they booked ups a table at the Restaurant over the road. This was brilliant and so went there every time. Sadly this year it has closed so we booked the hotels "La Sucrerie". The meal on the first night was good, a wide choice and I could find no fault. Essentially the second might was the same but there was large group which consisting of a few adults and many young people, in their mid teens, who I understood were talking part in a young person golf event. This group sucked in the restaurant staff and the service somewhat collapsed. That said, when we paid the member of staff did apologise for the lack of service. The breakfast is fully buffet service, both hot and cold, with plenty of choice. Hot drinks are from machines. The first morning was fine, as was the second until the "golf group" arrived. They swamped the buffet area for several minutes. This might not be the hotels problem but perhaps they could ask large groups to stagger their arrival. So I do I rate this hotel, good or average. In general it would be good, the issues did not spoil the visit, but then came the bar.In the past we had been to the inside bar at the hotel. The barman was from Spain and he started to reconise us in our visits, nice conversations with him, prompt service , given he had lots of people to deal with, and even a couple of free drinks. This time the indoor bar was not open, assuming the good weather, and we were directed to an outside area. We sat on stools at a table, there were lots of staff walking around but none took any notice of use. Ok they may have been busy, although not that we could see, but even if this was the case, could not one of them have just said "sorry we are very busy and will be with you asap", no.Finally someone took our order but the person who delivered it had several orders and did not know which table ordered what. This continued for the 2 nights we were there. Some bar staff would charge to our room, some wanted card payment at once, one of our party offered cash and was told that would upset the accounting system, however he paid cash but got no change. We seemed to just be a complete inconvenience to bar staff, getting in the way of them checking their mobile phones. So this time it was a disappointment compared with other visits. The hotel is ideally situated to visit the Waterloo Battlefield, which is why we have used it often. I would give it another go but they need to sort out some aspects, particularly the bar service.
