Nice hotel en the centre of Rio

    rating17 Jun 2015

Nice hotel in central Rio De Janeiro. Excellent food served in the restaurant. Also a small bar and restaurant across the way, which is very good. Many small shops within walking distance where you can buy food and drinks. Hotel staff are great but don't speak any English. However, most speak Spanish and that was good enough for me. The only downside was the ridiculous exchange rate of 3.40 real to £1, which is really bad when you consider that other exchanges in Copacabana offer 4.50 real to £1. So my tip is: DO NOT EXCHANGE YOUR MONEY AT THE HOTEL. I have read other reviews of people saying its dangerous area, etc... This is rubbish. People around here are very friendly and always willing to help you. I didn't feel unsafe at all. Common sense would tell you to get a taxi at night, regardless of where you are in the world. I would recommend to others. Ronnie A, Gerente at Gamboa Rio Hotel, responded to this review Dear guest,It´s very nice to hear that you spent a good time with us. Cheap place in a horrible area

    rating17 May 2015

Although the staff are nice and kind, the place is located in a horrible area, which is not safe at night. I did not feel comfortable sleeping there, with people shouting in the street. A man stands in front of the hotel the whole night and looks very much like a body guard. Ronnie A, Manager at Gamboa Rio Hotel, responded to this review Dear guest,I would like to thank you for your TripAdvisor's report. Our staff will be very glad to hear that you aprove our services. Our street has been reinaugurated this week, and many things have changed in the environment. I would like to invite you to come again to our hotel, and see the new area and enjoy the same hotel service. I am sure that you will be delighted with the developments.Best regards,Ronnie Arosa.

    Dangerous area

    rating16 May 2015

We felt very unsafe to walk there at night. We always had to get a taxi, and even the taxi drivers were feeling uncomfortable driving in the area. Plus, the area is quite noisy and breakfast is poor. The staff are nice but do not speak English. Ronnie A, Manager at Gamboa Rio Hotel, responded to this review Dear Sir,We appreciate to receive your comments regarding your stay at the Gamboa Rio Hotel. We are sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations; please allow me to express our sincerest apologies. The fact that our street is in works, during your stay, makes the area seem dirtier and more dangerous than it is really. Those works are included in the great project of Rio de Janeiro for the Olympic Games 2016. This project is called Marvelous Port, as you can see in http://www.cidadeolimpica.com.br/en/projetos/porto-maravilha-2/We are looking forward to seeing the end of those works and to find the area renewed. Thanks for your commetaries in TripAdvisor.Best regards,Ronnie Arosa.

    Great stay!

    rating05 Feb 2015

To be honest, I was a little scared about staying at this hotel after reading some reviews. I pictured a lone hotel on some abandoned street. The truth is that the street is really ugly, but just a block away is a major industry where white collar workers in ties and some in suits walk morning and night. Another block away is a fresh fruit market where they sell the greatest fruit at really low prices. The room I had was SUPER quiet, and the maids cleaned it every single day. Hot water, crisp clean sheets, spotless towels, a really great breakfast (the best I have had in Brazil), the cook fills all the ham and cheese even up to the last minute, fresh fruit, great coffee, rolls, eggs, etc... free internet near the front desk, great desk helpers, especially Selma who knew so many things!) And being so close to the metro you can go to so many places. My friend and I walked about 7 minutes to the Kandinsky art exhibition at the Centro Cultural Banco du Brazil!I had arrived from Sao Paulo, and was at the main Rio bus station, had the address to the hotel, and after a short ride from the bus found out that it is just around the corner from Metro Presidente Vargas! The next day I walked down one of the streets about 3 blocks and was at the same bus station!! I could have just walked.Well, to get to the hotel find the Metro Presidente Vargas. You will see one of the stops in the middle of the huge busy street. Go underground, and walk to the place where they sell tickets. Exit that stop, and then you will be on another street that is behind some buildings, and runs parallel to Ave. Vargas. Walk 2 blocks to the right and you will find the street Rue Alexandre Mackenzie. Walk straight, past the shops, little restaurants, and the different company entrances, and then you will see it! Honestly

    rating22 Jul 2014

Honestly, considering where it is located (downtown Rio), it was surprisingly adequate. I agree with other reviewers that the breakfast was OK and the rooms are decent. It's the location that influences the first impression. Once you get past that, it's OK. It's a little noisy, and there is no view of anything.I've been to Rio many times. Normally I stay in Copacabana or Ipanima. You can't compare this hotel to the ones in the tourist areas. However, during the World Cup, I had no choice as this was the only property available. Ronnie A, Gerente at Gamboa Rio Hotel, responded to this review Dear Guest,Thank you for sharing your experience and we hope have your visit again in the future.Kind Regards,Ronnie Arosa.
