  Not The Best/Expensive

  Sozopol is very pleasant and quaint- prices are higher than elsewhere in Bulgaria though (similar to the UK - maybe a little lower) - there are some fabulous restaurants with beautiful sea views - Urania was our favourite- a must try!). The Blu Bay plus points- good location on the edge of the Old Town - nice decor and very clean throughout- if you ask reception they’ll give you beach towels in a nice straw beach bag(nice touch but they don’t advertise this) - quite spacious bedroom with fluffy dressing gowns and slippers and plenty of toiletries.The view from the roof top pool area is lovely (but don’t expect to get many lengths in as it’s quite small and shallow - more of a plunge pool really).Down side - we had a garden view room (no sea view rooms were available at time of booking)- the balcony was spacious but overlooked a cobbled street backed by trees - not a garden but no big issue. The balcony lacks privacy - it’s separated from the adjacent balconies by metal perforated screening which meant you could see into all the adjoining balconies (and even into the adjoining rooms). Whatever you do don’t go near the mini bar (I know hotel mini bars are expensive but their prices are off this planet) miniature spirit/wine €12 -tube of Pringles €12 and if you’ve forgotten your sun cream a small bottle €40! The hotel has a lovely bar but was always completely empty- not surprising as a small glass of wine was €22! Breakfast buffet is located in a small corridor/room and does get a bit repetitive- saveloy type sausages mainly fatty rind bacon and scrambled eggs ( all just warm - not great) mushrooms and baked beans (both fine). There’s a small selection of cold meats/cheese/smoked salmon/fish along with cereals dried fruit yoghurt also breads/cakes/croissants/bottles of fruit juice/water. We found out half way through the holiday that you could ask for an omelet/poached eggs (didn’t get as far as asking for a fried egg!) but this option isn’t advertised by the hotel. Don’t even think about using the toaster as you’ll be there for ages waiting for the bread to toast (most people gave up). We had a welcome letter in our room thanking us for choosing the hotel and to contact the general manager should we feel the need to do so. I emailed him after a few days (a very courteous email IMO headed your lovely hotel and praising some of its aspects) saying that I appreciated it wasn’t an easy fix but that the balconies needed some more privacy- perhaps they could try a little more variety in the hot breakfast offering - maybe some peaches/ pears/ etc in juice to go with the muesli and that they needed a new toaster! I never had the courtesy of a response! The hotel does have some plus points but does need a little tweaking and is outrageously expensive ( one poor ladies husband fell and broke his hip - not in the hotel I must add- and spent 8 days after his operation in hospital -on his discharge they decided to eat in the hotels deserted restaurant- apparently the restaurant had a special offer - 3 course dinner €60 per person -so with a couple of drinks each they ended up with a €200 bill!

  No sleep due to nightclub noise

  Do not plan on getting any sound sleep if you stay there on a weekend. We were at the end of a 5 week Eastern Europe trip and booked the largest suite on a Friday/Saturday in order to relax before returning home. The room was nice, overlooked the harbor, a parking lot and the Theatro nightclub. Little did we know that the nightclub would be pounding with music from midnight til 6:00 am. Even with the windows closed, blinds closed and earplugs, the noise made it impossible to sleep. This was exceptionally disappointing, especially for the price we payed. When we talked to the front desk, they suggested earplugs and said it was bad on the weekends. I think this is something that should be communicated upon booking. We literally could not sleep soundly for 6 hours of the night. It was so bad that we almost left a day early and threw away our second nights reservation but finding another place on a summer Saturday would have been difficult. I resorted to sleeping with my headphones and music to tune out the club music - this is not a comfortable way to sleep. The pool is nice and the pool staff were attentive. Restaurant waiters were aloof and condescending. The food was very good, I will say - although very western prices. We were hoping for a nice finish to our trip and were disappointed in our stay.

  Rude staff

  Tried to stop here for a drink, waiter shouted “it’s crashed” at us, then heard him laughing at us as we walked past saying he had told us the bar the crashed. Clearly don’t want the custom, very rude staff.

  Tried to visit for a drink before going on a boat tour nearby. Was told “no it’s crashed” before heard both waiters laughing as we walked away. Clearly this business doesn’t want the custom. We went somewhere else and spent money elsewhere noticed people being served as we joined our tour. Poor service.!Avoid!!!

  Unexpected Wonderful Surprise

  We had a fantastic experience. Our room overlooking the sea was large and very comfortable with a nice balcony. The data was friendly and very accommodating. The rooftop pool was elegant as with a great view. Great for just relaxing and having a glass of wine. Would highly recommend coming to Sozopol just for the Blu Bay.
