Let’s start this review with a simple math exercise. How much is a daily public transport ticket/card in your city? Here in Sofia, it’s €2—multiply that by 30, and you get a rough idea of the price per night at Ibis Sofia Airport. Or take a pack of cigarettes: €3.40 in Sofia—multiply your country price by 20, and there you have it again. So, what should one expect from a hotel at that price point? Well… let me describe my experience.First, I couldn’t even use the airport transfer, as my email was simply ignored. When trying to arrange a return transfer, I was told at check in it couldn’t be booked two days in advance—only the day before, and of course not at the time I actually needed. Apparently, reception staff enjoy face-to-face interactions, so I had to come down in person just to sort out this basic issue. As a Gold member, I was initially given a room on the 2nd floor (out of 5) with a “lovely” view of kerosine fuel tanks. Interestingly, a quick visit to reception magically unlocked a room on the 4th floor with a mountain view—so availability clearly wasn’t the issue. They wanted to see me again 😉 FYI: when it comes to the room numbers, even - mountain view, odd - street & airport view. The whole hotel operation feels like a side business—perhaps an add-on to running Regus real estate office, renting office space (?), and, most importantly, airport parking with a transfer. That last one clearly takes priority. Guests not picked up at the airport are left to walk through grass and mud because, apparently, no one thought to finish the sidewalk just in front of the hotel...And then there’s breakfast—the universal benchmark of any hotel stay. It’s almost impressive how a hotel GM can acknowledge its own shortcomings so clearly—and yet still manage to deliver such a disappointing experience “…Your remarks about the food quality are particularly concerning. This is an area where we have clear standards, and your description indicates a failure to meet them. I have already initiated an internal review…”. I wonder: where exactly were those “clear standards” during my stay? Because they certainly weren’t present neither on my plate nor in front of the reception desk...It only took three weeks (!), a call to Accor Customer Care, and three emails sent to receive that reassurance. I would strongly recommend the General Manager try this “wonderful” breakfast herself for a few days. She might notice that the sausages are lukewarm, processed meat - a spam - pretends to be ham, and the butter—if it is butter—is suspicious at best. The coffee machine dispenses water at around 65–70°C, creating a charming foam when attempting to brew a tea. Bread quality matches the rest. The pancake machine enthusiastically produces batch after batch—unfortunately, all are undercooked. Perhaps an on/off switch, so pancakes are made on demand, would align nicely with the hotel evident focus on cost-saving.All of this for a hotel supposedly aligned with an international brand of Accor that prides itself on standards. Either those standards don’t quite reach their franchisees—or my expectations are wildly unrealistic? All in all, transport within Sofia is inexpensive and convenient therefore even if you’re departing early morning, as I did, don’t be afraid of staying in any other location. FYI: usually Maison Sofia – a 5* hotel costs almost the same as a room-night here…PS If you find my review as useful and helpful your “like” will be highly appreciated!

Positive experience at the Sofia Ibis Airport Hotel

    rating27 Mar 2026

Just stayed with my daughter at the Ibis Sofia Airport Hotel and couldn’t have asked for a better experience, especially after reading the negative reviews left recently. The hotel itself is clean, comfortable, and exactly what you need for a convenient airport stay, but what really stood out was the staff. The reception team were incredibly welcoming and helpful from the moment I arrived, making check-in smooth and stress-free. They were always happy to answer questions and went out of their way to ensure everything was just right.A special mention also to the shuttle drivers, who were punctual, friendly, and made transfers to and from the airport effortless. It made a big difference, especially when travelling on a tight schedule. The breakfast was good too, exactly what was needed to set us up for a day's travelling.Overall, a fantastic stay with excellent service – I wouldn’t hesitate to return or recommend this hotel to others looking for comfort and convenience near the airport.
