Sofia Balkan Palace Hotel - The good and the bad.

The good:- Hotel's central location is unbeatable.- The rooms on on floors 2-5 are all nicely renovated. “Deluxe King Rooms” are nice but small. The bathroom is also small but functional with an excellent shower. - Bed, linen, pillows etc are all clean and good quality- Breakfast is excellent. - Coffee shop menu and food is good.- Staff were all friendly and helpful.The bad:- No vehicles can get closer than about 100m from the hotel entrance, so you have to carry or wheel your luggage over rough cobblestones to get to the hotel.- The whole of the first floor is not yet renovated and all the rooms on that floor are old and tired relics of a bygone era which in my opinion should not even be on sale to guests, however the hotel still sells them at the same prices as the renovated rooms seen on booking sites, and acts like they are perfectly acceptable. They are not ! - My renovated and grand sounding ‘Deluxe King rooms’ had no desk, was barely big enough for 2 people to move around in and was not practical for working with a laptop etc. I was told by reception (but not sighted) that for full normal hotel facilities including a desk and chair etc you have to book a suite or higher spec room.

Excellent central location. Large comfortable room with good view. Staff welcoming but the hotel is so big that it is rather impersonal. Room cleaning rather haphazard: no hairdryer, basin area not well cleaned daily, hair conditioner ran out. All little things but a five star hotel should do better.

The housekeeping service was highly unsatisfactory, as we were required to repeatedly request basic room cleaning. There were consistent oversights regarding the provision of fresh towels and the replenishment of soap dispensers. These issues significantly detracted from our experience, despite the high quality of the room facilities and the hotel's excellent location.
