Great Hotel, Convenient Location, Superb Room

    rating27 May 2026

I just returned from a two night stay at the Lord Nelson. I was immediately impressed with my room. I had one king bed. The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable, with all amenities I would need, including coffee, tea, water, a fridge, a comfortable seating area, and a very comfortable bed. I ordered room service from the Arms and it was very good with prompt friendly service. The hotel is conveniently located. After work events I enjoyed a pleasant walk through the public gardens and there were several restaurants in the area to choose from. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. I took advantage of the fitness center during my stay, which was conveniently located on the same floor as my room and I loved the 24 hour access because I am an early riser. The fitness center was small but had everything you would need. I highly recommend this hotel and I would definitely stay there again.

Not up to what it used to be

    rating26 May 2026

Stayed for five nights while attending a nearby conference in Halifax. Arrived early and checked in with passport, credit card, room selection then left my bag in hotel storage. Returned at 3:15 PM and had to repeat the entire check-in process again with an unfriendly Reception employee. Ms. Sourpuss said my preferred front view room was not ready. I said I would wait. She phoned ‘somebody’ then said there was no timeframe for readiness. She offered a citadel view room. Okay, I took it.Surprise! It had a view of the flat roof of the building next door and some downtown high-rises off in the distance. Charming. The old-style under window A/C unit was noisy and when on it blew the sheer curtains billowing out into the room. The pull rods were tied together so there was no way to separate them short of ripping them apart. Tempting. The A/C was controlled from a new electronic panel on the wall next the door. No amount of pressing “Power Off” would shut the thing down. Also, entering the room required a tap of the room card followed by a fast grab of the door handle and a muscular push to get in. I now have enhanced arm strength. Their Bathroom for Midgets was a great morning and evening bend and flex exercise routine. The low sink counter reached to my thigh. And I am average height. The little toilet seat was fourteen inches off the floor. I could hear the shower next door. There was no light in the closet but there was a blue recycle bin in there.Next morning I chose to have breakfast in their pub/restaurant. Five steps up from the lobby. No ramp. More steps inside if you want the upper level or to eat outside on the terrace. I stayed on the main floor and ordered Salmon Benedict. They came on cold tough English muffins, a few slivers of grey fish with a slight scent of vinegar topped by two poached eggs. No Hollandaise sauce in sight. There was ketchup and lots of thick potato wedge fries you would expect to see with a steak. I could have used a steak knife to cut that muffin. Thankfully, buffet breakfast was provided at the conference. On my last morning at the Lord Nelson, I went around the corner to McDonalds on Spring Garden Road for an egg McMuffin and coffee. I had not been in Halifax for some years and when I do return, I will not be staying at the Lord Nelson.

You can't beat the location of this hotel. Right downtown. Easy walking distance to the pier and Citadel Hill. All the stuff were friendly and helpful. Room was large and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent at the Arms.

    A few improvements are needed

    rating24 May 2026

This hotel was fine. There are some pros and cons. The hotel lobby and bar is beautiful and it is in a heritage building. We were kindly upgraded to a larger room, and the living area and bedroom were very comfortable. The bathroom definitely needed an update. It looked tired and smelled slightly like sewer. It was also challenging to get the shower hot enough. The biggest con from our point of view was the parking. It is an underground lot directly beside the hotel, but the instructions about how to access it are not clear. Ideally, valet service would be offered or at least an offer of help with baggage. It was quite confusing to enter the parkade (and we were stuck behind another guest who was also confused) and our key card did not work when we tried to exit.Overall, the room was comfortable, but I don’t feel it was worth the price (which was quite expensive). Elena Karpechenko, General Manager at The Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites, responded to this review Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed the charm of our historic property, your upgraded accommodation, and the comfort of your stay.We sincerely appreciate your comments regarding the bathroom experience and parking access, as guest feedback like yours helps us continue improving. We regret the inconveniences you encountered and will certainly share your observations with our team.Thank you again for staying with us, and we hope to have the opportunity to provide an even better experience in the future.

Lovely hotel gorgeous room and great location

    rating23 May 2026

Really lovely hotel with friendly helpful staff and beautiful rooms. I recommend not choosing street view as some of those rooms might feature noise of trucks unloading at 5-6 am. Beeping and the metal on metal of the box mover (forgetting the word for the wheeled thing people stack boxes on and push up and down the ramp) hitting and dragging on the ramp. The staff had warned me but I wanted the view. After my first night I moved to a quiet room and had peace and quiet the rest of the stay. Elena Karpechenko, General Manager at The Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites, responded to this review Thank you for your lovely review. We’re so pleased you enjoyed the charm of the hotel, the comfort of your accommodations, and the care from our team throughout your stay. While our vibrant downtown location can occasionally bring a little early morning city energy, we’re delighted we could move you to a quieter room so you could fully relax and enjoy the rest of your visit. We truly appreciate your kind words and look forward to welcoming you back for another beautiful stay.
