The restaurant was the worst part of the hotel. Plus one elevator only

The room was comfortable. We were in the hotel for 5 nights. Had very little interaction with the hotel staff. Nice view from upper floor room. The main problems were that there is just one elevator for a large hotel. There were long wait times for it. And being on an upper floor made using the stairs not possible. The other thing was the restaurant. It had fairly mediocre food. We could not eat some of the dishes ordered. We ate here a bunch of times for breakfast and dinner as it was convenient. There service was quite poor. It was EXTREMELY slow. And the wait staff was surprisingly fairly unfriendly and indifferent. For a future visit, therefore, we would not stay here.

Except for the taxidermied polar bear in the lobby, it seemed like a standard mid-range hotel -- comfortable room, but nothing special. Considering that this was a convention hotel, it was odd that it had only one elevator and that guests were asked NOT to take their luggage on it.

Pluses and minuses

Pluses: the hotel is in a convenient location, a short walk to an excellent supermarket (Independent Grocer), and to interesting sites such as the Legislative Assembly and Northwest Cultural Center. The room (standard king room) was spacious, and had a Keurig coffee maker (excellent coffee to start the day!). Minuses: the hotel shuttle does not meet arrival flights, contrary to what's stated on the hotel website. It runs on a schedule, posted at the front desk. Our Air Canada flight arrived at 5:40 p.m., and we were outside just before 6 p.m. We saw the Chateau Nova shuttle van (this hotel is next to the Explorer Hotel) but no Explorer Hotel shuttle. We (and some other Explorer Hotel guests) waited till about 6:20 p.m. We then called the hotel and were told that the next shuttle would be at 7:30 p.m.! We ended up taking a taxi for $20. So, don't count on the "complimentary" hotel shuttle! Another major minus is the hotel's ONE elevator for 259 rooms. Guests are NOT allowed to bring their luggage int the tiny elevator (maximum 6 persons), there's a GUARD at the elevator to enforce the rules! This means frequent long waits to use the elevator. Bottom line: given the Explorer Hotel's rates, it may be worthwhile to look at other nearby hotels such as the Chateau Nova and Quality Inn.

Best Place to Stay in Yellowknife

While I haven't stayed elsewhere, it would be difficult to top the Explorer for its amenities, quality and location -- an easy 2-minute walk to downtown Yellowknife. Also close to museums and other sites. They do tend to send a LOT of emails ahead of time, which I just got used to. Very kind staff, and the hotel shuttle is especially welcome. They meet every arriving flight (not that there are too terribly many during the day) and then have their departures from the hotel timed to coincide with departing flights. Genius!
