Small, private hotel with a warm, friendly team

We started our trip to Costa Rica with 3 nights in Tortuguero. Manatus Hotel has 12 rooms for guests; it is small and intimate. The rooms were clean, with a decent size shower - and a private outdoor shower too! The fast boat ride to the hotel was fun: we spotted a crocodile and herons. We are a family of 4 vegetarians. Food was the same each day. But this wasn't an issue for us too much as we were only staying 2 days. We had a few tours booked: 2 canal trips and a trip to Tortuguero town. Whilst there, we also booked a turtle nesting tour. Our guide, Ricardo, accompanied us for all our tours. And its clear how ethical the trips are. The boat driver had AMAZING eyes and spotted so much wildlife. We saw crocodiles, caimans, parrots, turtles, and a sloth on our canal tours. A very special mention goes to the restaurant team, especially Gerald. He was so kind at letting me practise my Spanish, gently correcting errors and said he had a great opportunity to speak more in English too.The hotel is very well maintained; everything runs smoothly and efficiently.I would definitely recommend this hotel to others seeking a quiet, peaceful immersion into Costa Rican nature and its 'Pura Vida' ethos!!

Excellent visit to an amazing place

We had an excellent stay at Manatus. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the property is truly beautiful and the tours and guides are outstanding. Highly recommended. I'd give it five stars except that the food is only serviceable. I get the remote location makes it tough. The dining service more than makes up for it, and you're in that place for the tours, not the food. Birding on site is excellent. I'd choose them again.

Pretty rooms, very friendly and knowledgeable staff and amazing food.Luis was amazing! It was a calm and relatively quiet atmosphere where it was easy to relax and socialise in open spaces. The internet was not very fast but did work. The turtle tour and twilight walk must be paid in USD (turtle tour @ 8pm -10pm / 10pm-00 you cannot choose) turtle tour $50 and twilight walk $35 each. It was good value. The rooms were very pretty but insects could get in sometimes

Just fabulous…Loved the journey to the hotel on the private boat and the hotel was a little oasis. Small and intimate with lovely friendly service. Had a couple of tours from the hotel into the mangroves with such a wonderful guide.

Visit Caribbean Costa Rica!

Hotel Manatus in Tortuguero was wonderful. Getting there is both work and reward. We transferred from San Jose to Guapiles with our tour company. Had included lunch and then continued on in a new van operated by the hotel bumping through banana plantations for another 1.5 hours (with some roadwork delay) before boarding a small boat for the final 1.5 hours to Manatus. If they had called the boat ride a tour we would have paid for it! Very scenic. Tortuguero is a tiny village with numerous hotels, large and small, scattered nearby. Manatus has only 12 separate cottages each pretty, very comfortable and well equipped. For such a small remote place the included meals at the restaurant are excellent!! And the drinks fairly priced. Staff are super friendly and attentive. The night tour was a bit extra but the village and 2 park boat tours (think Disneyland Jungle Cruise with real animals) are included. All are excellent. Our boatman, Ronnie, has incredible skill and our guide, Ricardo, a wealth of knowledge. I might not have thought to include the Caribbean if I planned our trip on my own but in the end it may have been our favorite part of all. By all means check it out if you can.
