    How is this 5-star rated?

    rating30 Sept 2026

I stay in a lot of 5-star hotels each year, about 40-50 nights on average. I don’t usually bother with reviews, but this hotel was so poor I felt I had to for the sake of others who might have higher expectations from a property that is styled as 5-star and a member of the small luxury hotels of the world group. The staff were a mixed bag: very good on arrival, poor in the breakfast area and on departure. Cars are valet parked on arrival but are not returned to the front on departure. The room we were in (210) was like stepping back into what must have passed for 5-star luxury in the late 70s. Poor bathroom facilities, and a first for me with vinyl covered flooring - a new low in luxury accommodation. The worst wifi ever and I was unable to reach the concierge on the dedicated iPad to arrange for the collection of our bags, because the phone icon mysteriously disappeared from the home screen. As I write I have been waiting upon the delivery of my car for 10 minutes after staff relented because it was raining. The breakfast room is too small for the entire hotel so we breakfasted in the underground cave next to the kitchen, which was an event in itself. The kitchen door is kept open (presumably because of the heat) and consequently we got to hear all the staff being berated by the head waitress and all sorts of crashings and bangings going on. If the hotel weren’t so expensive it would have been funny. As it was, it was laughable. Thankfully, we were only there for one night! Quite the worst 5-star hotel I’ve ever visited in my 62 years. I would rate this only as a 2-star establishment.

    Le Cep Exceptional Stay

    rating18 Sept 2026

Excellent service throughout our 3 day stay despite the absence of Mr Jean-Claude Bernard who was away we believe on business. Adrian Dumas, the Gentlemanly Accountant, Michael on the bar and the Reception Team all worked seemlessly to the very highest level. We look forward to returning for the 4 nights arriving on Sunday 20th September. Hotel nice & ideally situated but don’t book cheapest rooms

    rating17 Sept 2026

A warm welcome from the concierge & reception team set up our 2 night stay well. We also had an unexpected room upgrade too. The hotel is full of character and ideally situated for all Beaune has to offer. The breakfast was lovely and in a beautiful setting in the courtyard. We had dinner at their bistro one night and the veal was outstanding, as was the rest of the meal. Definitely worth visiting. We typically booked the cheapest rooms in the best hotels when on our travels. It’s worked very well over the years. However with this hotel it didn’t. The room we had was large and bathroom modern but I don’t think it had been decorated since 1960. Many other old properties manage to blend old & characterful with modernity but not this room. The aircon wasn’t much use and very very loud. Unable to use at night if you want to sleep so we resorted to opening the window. However our room was directly above the courtyard where there is a 24 hour bar. There was no noise from the bar as such but it is clearly a main thoroughfare for staff going about their work. The noise of moving furniture, crockery & glasses etc was significant all through the night. It wasn’t relaxing. If I was being extremely complimentary I’d give the room 3 stars but other than that the hotel generally lived up to its billing. If we were to go back I’d have to book a modernised room (assuming they have them). However, I’d likely be looking at Relais & Chateaux just outside the town before Le CEP after this experience. It was a real disappointment
